As a result, it did not take long for Guardians fans and even the cast and crew to express their support for Gunn and call for his return to finish the project he started. Thank goodness they were successful because James Gunn was rehired to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as a result.
The third and final Guardians of the Galaxy film directed by James Gunn almost did not get done, which is remarkable (The Suicide Squad). While Gunn’s concept for a trilogy was in jeopardy when he was let go for a dispute involving some inappropriate tweets, it was clear that Marvel planned to continue using the characters in subsequent movies. Even though the tweets from ten years ago were problematic and inappropriate, they were not necessarily malicious.
Since we last saw the galaxy’s favourite group of outcasts, they have experienced a lot. Since the release of the first film in 2014, the team has engaged in combat with a sentient planet, seen the bulk of its members perish after Thanos’ (Josh Brolin) Snap before being resurrected to battle the Mad Titan’s army, and even gone on a few adventures with Thor (Chris Hemsworth). They went from being virtually unknown to being adored fan favourites and the gem of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to their nearly ten-year journey.
