A single, unexpected moment can often transform a life’s mission. For Devi Krishnapriya Ji, founder of the Chain Bihari Gaushala in Mathura, such a moment occurred when she witnessed a wounded cow lying helpless on the roadside. This heart-wrenching accident did not just stir her compassion–it set her on a lifelong path of service and cow protection.
Born in Vrindavan in 1997, Devi Krishnapriya Ji was raised in a deeply devotional environment. Her childhood revolved around Banke Bihari temple visits and the traditions of the Nimbark Sampradaya, fostering a spiritual mindset from an early age. As she blossomed into a renowned katha vachak, taking the stage at grand events like the Kumbh Mela, her teachings increasingly emphasized the values of seva (service) and compassion.
However, it was a shocking roadside encounter that shaped her destiny. On her way to narrate a Bhagwat Katha, she found a cow critically injured after a road accident. To her dismay, not a single passerby stopped to help. The image of the suffering cow and society’s indifference left a profound mark on Devi Krishnapriya Ji’s heart. She took personal responsibility to arrange treatment and care for this gentle being, ultimately saving its life.
This single act of rescue propelled her to envision a sanctuary where abandoned, injured, and ailing cows would never face such neglect again. It became the inspiration for the Chain Bihari Gaushala, a specialized shelter devoted to medical care, nutrition, and dignity for cows. Today, the Gaushala houses over 200 cows and is expanding to accommodate 1,000, making it one of the region’s largest efforts for cow welfare.
The creation and growth of Chain Bihari Gaushala have been fueled by proceeds from Devi Krishnapriya Ji’s kathas, donations, and the devoted support of her followers. Every aspect of the Gaushala, from veterinary facilities to clean sheds and nutritious fodder, reflects her vision to provide a safe haven for these sacred animals.
Devi Krishnapriya Ji continues to inspire people to see gau seva as more than a tradition—it is a living testament to empathy and the preservation of cultural values. Her story is a reminder that one moment of compassion can ripple outward, shaping a life dedicated to kindness and social good for generations to come.
