GPS signal jammer technology in Russia and China is improving

Russia's Rossiyskaya Gazeta daily cited military experts as saying that the Rychag-AV jammers added significantly to reducing the effectiveness of the US air strike on Syria's Ash Sha'irat airbase in April 2017.

China has installed equipment on two fortified outposts on the Spratly Islands capable of jamming communications and radar systems, which U.S. officials say signifies a stepped-up militarization of the South China Sea. "China has deployed military wifi jammer equipment to its Spratly Island outposts," a Department of Defense official said.

The move to install the communication and radar jamming systems will strengthen China's ability to assert territorial claims in the South China Sea and stop U.S. military operations in that region, which includes some of the world's largest and busiest shipping routes.

Small scale testing of cell phone jammer technology in the United States

Similar tests occurred in 2010, but Williams said Wednesday's effort was significant because jamming technology has evolved, as have inmates' efforts to smuggle in the devices. Such tests, she said, could lead to the broader use of technologies like jamming inside prisons to immobilize inmate phones, which officials across the country have described as their No. 1 security threat.

The renewed interest in jamming within federal facilities follows an announcement by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who told a national meeting of corrections officials that federal prisons would start testing the technology anew.

American analysts first noticed the Russian military jamming drones in eastern Ukraine after the invasion of Crimea four years ago, Humphreys said. The jammers "had a pretty significant impact" on UN surveillance drones, which were grounded for days after gathering intelligence from the air. American military officials would not say whether the latest jamming has caused drones to crash, citing operational security.

But the sources told NBC that Russian's sophisticated jamming equipment, which was developed by its military, has proved to be effective even against some encrypted signals and anti-jamming receivers.

The Jammer's role is to interrupt the communication link (or network) between two (or more) "partners", when they are trying to talk with each other or deliver certain data between them. Jamming the communication link between a Drone and its Operator is a specific case out of many more; we can try to jam the communication between a cellular and the base station, between two tactical radios, between a bomb and a remote control that is used to activate it, etc.
