Sri Lanka of old is the Sinhala kingdom. The moonstone is called Shandra Kanti which could be translated as “the feminine beauty of the moon “(Shandra or Chandra being the lunar deity). The pearly stones, one of the riches of the island, are certainly pieces of moonbeams. Their beneficial and magical effect favors the monsoon. Women have always sewn moonstones in their clothes to have children, this rite can be found in all civilizations.
The moonstones of Sri Lanka also designate very old ornamental friezes of sandstone or granite decorating the entrances of Buddhist temples and palaces as a sign of welcome. Most often made up of animals (elephants, horses, etc.), these sculptures are symbolically shaped like a half-moon, hence their name. They have no relation to the moonstone extracted from the deposits. In Ambalangoda, lit by candles, the miners progress through narrow galleries saturated with humidity, propped up with palm wood. The conditions for extracting moonstones are the same today.
Moonstone in the Middle Ages
Marbode, bishop of the 12th century returns to the powers of selenite (which, they say in the 19th century would be the adular): " It marks the phases of the moon, increases with its birth, decreases with its decline ". In the 14th century, Jean de Mandeville also recalls his other powers in lithotherapy: “The moonstone makes lightly walk ceulx who go by sea and guard storms and perilz of thieves. She keeps the fat women and has them delivered in due time. "
In the Renaissance
The Roman lord Marc-Antoine Colonne is a cardinal archbishop, librarian of the Vatican in the 16th century. He assures, in his memories, that Pope Leo X, son of Laurent de Medici the Magnificent, had a selenite on which a white spot grew and decreased at the same time as the moon. One of his successors, his cousin Medici Pope Clement VII, possessed a heliolite with a gold spot which marked the sunrise and sunset.
Later, in 1734, "Le Journal des Sçavants", the first French periodical review, considers these allegations completely eccentric and it will be the end of the stone which changes appearance at the same time as the moon!
Moonstone in modern times
As always at that time, many scientists looked at the moonstone in order to identify it, name it and definitively classify it, after many analyzes, in the feldspars.
The pearly feldspar will be definitively renamed “adular” after the Italian physicist Ermenegildo Pini, ecclesiastical, professor of natural history in Milan, discovered it in 1783 in the Swiss Alps. He would have asked an Italian artist to engrave in intaglio a representation of Achilles on an adular, and the result would have been admirable.
The geologist Dolomieu, who gave his name to the Italian Alps, the “Dolomites”, had a moonstone as big as a small apple. He would have picked it up from some very ancient Roman ruins. Scientists at the end of the 18th century wonder where this ancient and real feldspar with remarkable cleavage came from.
We can then distinguish two kinds of adulars:
The western adulares of the Saint-Gothard , often small but with incomparable brilliance. They often have a small defect: oblique streaks that cross the stone. The oriental adulars from Ceylon. In larger pieces, slightly duller but homogeneous. The adular of mineralogists gave way to the moonstone of jewelry with the advent of Art Nouveau at the end of the 19th century.
Nature is becoming fashionable. René Lalique was inspired by flora and fauna and designed jewels which were to become very popular. He uses unknown or neglected stones, his favorite is moonstone. Her somewhat strange creations, half women, half animals, delight the great eccentrics of the moment, weary of too classic jewelry. Sarah Bernhardt will wear the famous large dragonfly brooch, with moonstone wings assembled like a tiny marquetry.
