Professionals of Online Therapy - Are they Worth?

If you are frustrated with your partner or life. This Article is best for you!

We have already established that Mental Health needs to be accessible for all, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or status. Online Therapy gives access to a platform with opportunities for anybody who wants to try taking professional help, with the freedom to choose the exact therapy they want to focus on without the overwhelming prices.

There have been multiple articles about Online Therapy and what it offers, but what about the Professionals behind the screens who are doing the most work for people in need of mental health guidance? Yes, the Therapists Online, who take the time out of their day and provide effective help to us through the internet at OUR convenience.

The Counselors, Psychiatrists, Therapists, and Psychologists have respectable degrees in their profession, and their knowledge is provided online for the people who struggle to feel comfortable with the Traditional methods. Online Therapy may sound easier than Traditional Therapy, but it is just as emotionally taxing and challenging for the Therapists. We tend to forget that they are human too, and that they also need time and balance in their life in order to have the energy and motivation to help others in need.

What is Online Therapy?

Let’s have a quick recap of what Online Therapy is before we talk about the therapists.

Online therapy is a practice that has been going on since the 1970s, when the first remarkable instance of it was seen during the 1972 International Conference on Computers. Its main purpose was to provide aid through the internet for the mentally struggling around the world, using technical means such as Video calls, texts. Audio recordings, phone calls, and emails. This helped the clients find a more approachable way to share their problems and get help.

Challenges faced by Online Therapists

Now, moving on to understanding the challenges faced by the online therapists around the world

  1. Reduced Interpersonal cues: Unlike traditional sessions, online sessions lack the touch of being able to read the client’s body language or catching subtle facial expressions that go unnoticed by normal eyes. This problem can be somewhat fixed if the session is done on video, but even then, sometimes the camera fails to capture certain gestures and limits the visual for the therapist.
  2. Technical Issues: Having issues with the internet or the website can disrupt the smooth sailing of the session, leading to the client having to either repeat themselves or find the session less engaging or helpful.
  3. An Isolated Work: The Therapist is in their room or office, working on the reports of clients once the sessions are over. It can take hours to finish just one client’s report, and given that clients can contact them anytime, it can really hinder their social life and emotional restrain.

How Effective Has Remote Therapy Been?

Let us look at this statistical view from the Wiley Online Library about how Online Therapy has been effective for therapists working, especially during COVID-19 -

A Scale of Therapists talking about how Effective Online Therapy is

  • Very Effective: 7%
  • Effective: 51%
  • Somewhat Effective: 30%
  • Not so Effective: 10%
  • No Effective at all: 2%

As we can see, the majority of 58% therapists confidently felt that Online therapy was effective as a practice, with 30% of therapists staying neutral, and 12% finding the therapy ineffective or lacking.

There is also another statistical graph that shows how comfortable clients were during online sessions and if they’d recommend it for others who seek therapy -

A Scale of Clients talking about the comfort levels during Online Therapy

  • Very Comfortable: 2%
  • Comfortable: 59%
  • Not sure: 27%
  • Not comfortable: 13%

Here we see that 61% of the clients say that Online Therapy was comfortable for them, while 27% of them remained neutral, and 13% were not comfortable at all.

These statistics show us that the majority of therapists and clients find Online Therapy effective and comfortable, which shows that it can work for the majority of others who want to try it.

Of course, digital therapy is not for everyone because people have different methods of expressing themselves or coping mechanisms that do not align with the online platform, and that is okay.

There is something for everybody, which is why both the traditional and digital forms of therapy exist now, so we can reach a larger audience who require guidance or support.
