In a recent survey across 40 countries, we set out to understand the pulse of the people on global fashion and identity trends, and what style says about who we are becoming in today’s world.

Across India, South Africa, Nigeria, the UAE, Kenya, Indonesia, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, one message consistently stood out:

fashion is becoming more personal, more emotional, more intentional, and more expressive than ever.

It has shifted from being a superficial choice to something deeper — almost like a daily reflection of our inner world.

Who We Spoke To: The Global Voices Behind the Insights

Our respondents spanned major regions across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Large metros (52.14%) dominated the responses, underscoring how people live at the intersection of global media influence and local cultural roots. Despite fashion being international, identity remains deeply local. People borrow from worldwide trends, but they anchor their style in heritage, environment, and personal meaning.

This blend of global inspiration and regional identity forms the foundation of how fashion expresses identity across cultures.

How People Describe Their Style — And What It Really Says

While runways and influencers push dramatic trends, everyday people paint a very different picture. Comfort is the dominant trend of our time: nearly 44% say their style is primarily comfortable. This shift shows that people no longer want clothes that perform for society — they want clothes that align with their emotions, routines, and sense of authenticity.

Another 29% describe themselves as a “mix of everything.” This reflects the rise of hybrid style — curated from global fashion sources, thrift culture, social media, nostalgia, and personal storytelling. Global fashion and identity trends show that the modern individual isn’t one-dimensional. Style today is fluid, layered, and shaped by many influences at once.

How Strongly Does Fashion Express Identity?

A remarkable 78.7% believe fashion is a key part of expressing who they are. Around the world, people are using clothing to communicate confidence, creativity, calmness, rebellion, cultural pride, ambition, and emotional alignment.

Clothing has become a personal narrative:

  • Workwear reflects aspirations.
  • Streetwear reflects independence.
  • Cultural wear reflects heritage.
  • Grooming reflects self-respect.
  • Everyday choices reflect who we want to be seen as.

In a digital-first world where impressions form through screens, style becomes a powerful tool of self-definition. What we wear is becoming a deliberate choice of how we want the world to understand us.

How Often Are People Updating Their Style?

Globally, people are exploring fashion — but thoughtfully. Over 30% shop only when necessary, while a combined 59% try new styles often or occasionally. This balance confirms that people are inspired by trends but are not mindlessly consuming them.

Micro-updating is the new norm — adding one new piece, experimenting with a silhouette, blending cultures, or revisiting old favourites. Sustainability and cost-of-living concerns also push people toward mindful purchases.

Grooming: The New Confidence Currency

Across cultures, grooming is now seen as a foundation of confidence. Over 81% rate grooming as highly important — spanning skincare, haircare, fragrance, hygiene, and self-maintenance. For many, grooming is not vanity; it’s self-care, identity care, and emotional alignment.

Are Global Trends Shaping People?

Global fashion influences are strong but not overpowering. 56% feel affected by global trends, while 44% lean toward personal or local choices. This balance reveals a hybrid identity where people:

  • adopt what inspires them globally
  • but remain rooted in culture, comfort, and emotional consistency

This hybridisation is at the heart of modern global fashion and identity trends.

People listed their biggest style influencers as:

When buying fashion, quality stands above everything. Price and fit follow closely. Sustainability, at 10.31%, is rising steadily — not yet dominant, but definitely meaningful.

People want clothes that last, styles that feel like “them,” and choices that respect their lifestyle and environment.

Is Fashion Becoming More Inclusive?

How fashion expresses identity across cultures Skin-tone representation, cultural visibility, and gender-neutral options are growing, but the progress remains uneven. People see meaningful steps forward, yet also recognize clear gaps. Across cultures, fashion is slowly expanding the space for individuals to express their identity authentically — but even as old rules fade, the journey toward true representation is still unfolding.

Fashion today isn’t dictated by magazines or runways — it’s shaped by people, their comfort, their culture, their identity, their memories, and their moods. It tells the world who we are, what we value, how we want to feel, and how we want to be seen.
