Winter often leaves homes looking bare, dull, and a little worn down after months of harsh weather. Before summer arrives, it’s a great time to refresh your spring curb appeal and shake off the effects of winter.

Improving your home’s appearance focuses on enhancing the look of your home from the street. Done well, it can create a welcoming first impression for guests and may even increase your home’s value.

The good news is that updating your home’s exterior is not as complex as dealing with the summer termite activity. With a few simple improvements here and there, you can make a noticeable difference. To make things easier, here’s a checklist of small updates that can create a big visual impact.

1. Clean Up and Powerwash

Before any touch-ups, clean your home's exterior first. Powerwash sector by sector, starting from the driveway and walkways up to the porch and patio, including siding and fences. Pay attention to removing winter dirt to instantly brighten your home.

Next, clean your windows and screens. Wash your glass windows inside and out. Remove dust and pollen from screens for a newer and cleaner look.

Finally, don't forget your roof and gutters. Clear all leaves and debris you find and inspect for any visible damage.

2. Follow through on Landscaping

To survive the southern summer, you need to overhaul your landscaping. However, you don’t have to hire an expert to dig and excavate your yard. A few additions can make a big difference when updating your outdoor space.

Add spring flowers, if you don’t have them yet. Consider some marigolds, petunias, or geraniums. If you want more texture, add hedges and bushes.

Next, refresh your garden beds to replenish the nutrients in the soil. Add 2 to 3 inches of organic mulch to improve the soil’s health and suppress weeds. After that, water the soil thoroughly and rake the mulch evenly for maximum effect.

3. Spruce up the Front Door Area

Update the look of your front door area with painting and replacements. Paint your front door with your preferred spring color. Choose from the following options:

  • Classic red
  • Sage green
  • Soft blue
  • Sunny yellow

Clean the door hardware for a brighter and fresher look. For something different, replace the door knobs, knockers, and mail slots with more stylish ones. And like a cherry on top, hang a seasonal wreath on the door.

4. Improve the Walkways and Driveways

Give your driveways and walkways a basic makeover. Start by repairing and resealing the driveway’s concrete or asphalt. Make sure you clean debris off the surface and apply a filler compatible with your driveway.

In your pathway, install warm lighting to set a cozy ambiance. You can choose solar lights to save electricity and money. Lantern-style stakes look rustic and perfect for the inviting visuals you're building.

Finally, define your walkways. Add stone borders to better define your home's pathways. You can also use bridge edging or decorative gravel paths for a unique and more stunning look.

5. Revamp the Porch or Entryway

On the porch, install comfortable outdoor seating. Choose seating that matches the aesthetic of your porch. Consider the following options:

  • Small benches
  • Porch swings
  • Rocking chairs

Place decorative planters on the porch. Position them beside the door to emphasize the walkway. Large pots with mixed plants work well if you can't decide what type of plant to place on the porch.

Finally, replace your old doormat with the one that matches the season. If not that, you can have a personalized mat created and used instead.

6. Add Outdoor Decor

Outdoor decorations come in different forms, and it's up to you to decide which will be perfect for your home. Choose decor compatible with the vibe and look you’re going for.

For the porch, add throw pillows and outdoor rugs, especially in the area where you placed your comfortable seating ensemble. You can also install lanterns and hanging baskets around the porch.

Update the look of your garden, too, by adding decor as accents. Bird feeders and small fountains can elevate the visuals of the garden. Decorative garden stakes can also work to add flair to your landscape.

7. Introduce Small Elements and Touch-ups

Look around for possible updates, repairs, and replacements that still need your attention. Here are some of the adjustments that may seem superficial, but can refine your curb appeal:

  • House Numbers - Upgrade your house numbers to decorative or modern numbers
  • Outdoor Lighting - Replace outdated outdoor lighting fixtures with trendy and stylish ones
  • Mailboxes - Replace worn mailboxes or repaint them if they can still be saved
  • Fences - Paint or stain the fence with a fresh finish for a new look

Conclusion

Small updates can go a long way in improving your home’s curb appeal. While major renovations require significant time and money, simple touch-ups produce noticeable results with fewer requirements.

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your home after winter and prepare for the warmer months ahead. With a few thoughtful improvements, you can create a more welcoming space for guests, outdoor gatherings, and everyday enjoyment.
