Carbon neutrality is a practice that should already be considered essential in our daily lives. Big corporations are already aiming for it, but the number of those who have committed to the cause far outweigh those who do not. In schools, it is the same.
As carbon neutral schools in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom lead the way to a more eco-conscious way of educating children, let’s look at the aspects that should be considered when aiming for carbon neutrality.
Scale of implementation
Though it is not impossible for a school to completely switch to everything green overnight, this would require a huge budget. Plus there needs to be a conscious consideration of where old resources will go. Without planning for this, your aim to be carbon neutral will rest upon wasteful practices.
Areas to focus on
Introducing carbon neutrality to a school will consider not just the footprint of the school operations, but also the acquisition of new or refurbished resources. Day-to-day operations generate plenty of carbon emissions. Consider biking and walking in place of driving to and from school. Within the school itself, computers and other machinery should also be used eco-consciously.
Students’ participation
The best way to implement a zero-carbon school is to get all the students on board. This means incentivizing their participation, whether it’s through being involved in hydroponics or in upcycling or composting their food waste.
Mode of communication
Taking on a task as big as this requires effective communication practices. Internally, you want everyone to know what is happening. Externally, you want to let others know that you are aiming for a carbon-neutral school. This will then encourage others to do the same, which amplifies the change you are trying to do.
We are now experiencing the effects of climate change, from warmer winters to the melting of the ice caps. It is expected that things will only get worse if we don’t act now. Start with changes in your own school, and encourage others to do the same.
