The Pāṇini’s Aṣṭādhyāyī is a very important work in the form of sūtra, which are short sayings, that sets the rules for the grammar of ancient Sanskrit as a language. At the same time, the text gives a general model for describing languages that goes beyond describing Sanskrit as a particular language. This is the fourth course in a series of four based on Pāṇini’s Aṣṭādhyāyī about Vyākaraṇa (grammar). Vyāḍi explained the theory of language in the Indian tradition, which is where Pāṇini got his ideas for formal grammar. After Pāṇini, Bhartṛhari wrote a book called Vākyapadīya that explained this in detail. This book explains the universal theory of language and is seen as a way to freedom in the Vyākaraṇa tradition.

  Vyakarana – IV Course content:

The course explains the history of the Vyākaraṇa school of thought and compares it to other Indian schools of thought. It also gives an overview of Vākyapadīya and a selection of parts that deal with the main ideas of Vyākaraṇa philosophy.

Students in this class will be able to:

Learn about the theory of language that led to the idea of apoddhara (which means "dissection and abstraction"), which Panini used to create his Astadhyayi.

Language and grammar are mental processes that you need to understand.
