Pioneer of African Women in Tech: Interview with Dorcas Muthoni

BTW Media shines a spotlight on Dorcas Muthoni, the Kenyan computer scientist and entrepreneur who has become a true pioneer for women in technology across Africa. In an in‑depth interview titled “Pioneer of African Women in Tech,” Muthoni shares her remarkable journey—from a university student discovering the Internet to a leading advocate for women in STEM and a driving force in Africa’s digital landscape.

Connecting Africa and Creating Opportunities

Muthoni’s career began with groundbreaking work connecting Kenyan universities to the Internet—a period she recalls as “stepping into a new world” during her computer science studies. This early experience instilled a lifelong belief in connectivity and open access as essential tools for education and empowerment.

Building on this vision, she founded AfChix in 2004, a pan‑African network of women technologists committed to mentoring, training, and fostering female participation in computing. Through AfChix’s workshops and mentorship programs across countries including Senegal and Morocco, hundreds of women have gained practical tech skills and vital professional connections.

Alongside her advocacy, Muthoni has led Open World Limited, a top software and consulting firm that supports governments and enterprises across Africa, delivering digital infrastructure, software solutions, and transformative technology projects.

Leadership, Recognition, and Lasting Impact

In 2020, Muthoni expanded her influence by joining HF Group in Kenya as a non‑executive director, marking a milestone in the male‑dominated fintech and corporate board arenas. Her combination of technical expertise, business insight, and commitment to gender equity distinguishes her as a visionary leader and role model.

A key element of her legacy is the PhD scholarship program at Spain’s Pompeu Fabra University, launched in 2018. This initiative supports African women pursuing ICT‑focused doctoral research and encourages scholars to return to Africa’s ICT sector, creating a continent‑wide ripple effect in tech leadership.

Empowering Women, Shaping Technology

Muthoni’s guiding principle—“Embracing tech lets women advance”—reflects her dedication to closing gender gaps in STEM and unlocking new opportunities for African women. Her work extends beyond access to technology; it emphasizes access to leadership, decision‑making, and transformative roles in the industry.

As Africa’s economies increasingly focus on digital infrastructure, software development, open-source innovation, and Internet governance, Muthoni’s career serves as a blueprint for blending entrepreneurship, advocacy, and tangible impact. Her story is framed within the broader evolution of the continent’s digital ecosystem.

Looking Forward

With the tech industry rapidly advancing through cloud computing, AI, connectivity projects, and data‑centre growth, Muthoni stresses the importance of including women in shaping these systems. She urges governments, organizations, and private enterprises to implement inclusive practices, mentor emerging talent, and build robust pipelines for women in technology.
