AGM (absorbent glass mat) batteries use different technologies than lead-acid batteries. It uses a fibrous borosilicate glass separator that absorbs electrolyte. AGM batteries are spill proof.
How do AGM batteries work?
During the charging process of agm battery, hydrogen and oxygen will be produced. Due to the existence of small catalysts, hydrogen and oxygen will combine to form water. Recombination results in almost zero water loss and also consumes heat. The charging technology and voltage used to charge agm batteries are similar to standard batteries. There is no need to purchase a dedicated charging controller or any other control equipment. Because the AGM battery has a low internal resistance, it does not generate too much heat and provides a large current when needed. Batteries are usually charged quickly and discharged for a short time – up to 1% to 3% per month, thus having long durability and reliability.
Floating or standby
So that the agm battery is always in a state of charge. It is recommended to keep the voltage lower than normal charging or cycle charging to prevent battery damage. Floating charge or standby charge voltage varies between 2.25-2.3v/battery or 13.2-13.7v.
Cyclic charging is used when the battery is recharged repeatedly after discharging. Cycle charging of agm battery should take a certain time, otherwise overcharging may damage the battery. The voltage is about 2.4-2.5 volts / battery, or up to 14.7 volts. The advantage of using 14.1 – 14.2 volts is that the battery life is longer. Battery life depends on continuous charging and discharging cycles. When you notice that the backup capacity of the battery is decreasing, it indicates that you need to replace the battery at some time.
You can use solar panels to charge agm batteries. There are two things to remember:The solar panel shall provide sufficient voltage (V) to charge the battery.The charging through the solar panel shall be adjusted by the charging controller to avoid damage to the battery due to overcharge.
It is not recommended to use electrolyte battery in combination with agm battery for the following reasons:When considering charging the agm and the wet battery at the same time, the system will perform one of the following two operations: either continue to charge the wet battery until it is fully charged, or it may overcharge the AGM. In addition, when the AGM is fully charged, it may turn off, while the wet battery is only partially charged.When the wet battery is under charged, it gets power from the AGM battery. This will shorten the life of both batteries due to insufficient charging and exhaustion.
