A HeadlightTester is a way to test both the intensity and alignment of a car headlightto make sure it meets a certain minimum standard for that particularcountry of use. Cars all come with the standard equipment in place totest them, but what most owners don’t realize is that they should beusing headlight testers regularly to make sure that they are workingat their best and most reliable levels. It’s not unusual for a car tohave issues with its headlight brightness after years of driving it,and even though factory headlights are tested, it’s the consumers’responsibility to test for defects and keep the lights functioningoptimally. There’s nothing more frustrating than buying ahigh-quality car only to find that it has fallen victim to adefective headlight, so anyone looking to buy a new car must haveaccess to an accurate and detailed headlight tester to make sure thatthey’re buying one of the brightest and most effective lights.
Thereare two types of HeadlightTesteravailable. The first is purely a visual device, whereby users canlook at the light to see whether it is being reflected properly andwhether the light is being reflected at all. Using a headlight testeris quick and simple, but can only work accurately if the lights havebeen properly installed – and by having the installation workcorrectly, we mean having the original factory headlamps, notreplacements or aftermarket ones. A second method uses a mathematicalalgorithm that enables the tester to calculate the intensity of thelight beam at various orientations. This is a little moresophisticated but can be fooled by cracks or other opticalirregularities in the light path, so it’s not recommended for usewith aftermarket products.
