The federal science agency announced Tuesday that it is launching a marijuana testing program to help ensure products people buy from retailers and pharmacies are properly labeled.The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) said that because cannabis is federally certified under the 2018 Farms Act, there is an urgent need for consumers to be adequately informed about the cannabis products it sells on the market. As a result, the agency will lead a slotxo multi-phase program to support best practice in laboratory testing. While the cannabis quality assurance program (CannaQAP) will immediately focus on hemp-derived oils such as CBD, officials say it is possible they will expand the program to test concentrated and edible cannabis flowers – a unique step. Notable for federal agencies while Intoxicating marijuana is still banned.The project is meant to help laboratories accurately measure the key chemical compounds in cannabis, hemp and other cannabis products, including oils, edibles, tinctures and balms, part of the U.S. Department of Commerce. It also added that plant material samples would be sent for testing later.NIST slotxo said that while most labels indicate the concentrations of the two key cannabis ingredients, THC and CBD, many laboratories have had no experience with these tests, leading to instances of unreliable results.When you walk into a store or drugstore and see a label that says 10 percent CBD, you want to know you can trust that number, says Brent Wilson, a research chemist at NIST.The institute will send samples of hemp oil containing the same concentrations of THC, CBD and more than a dozen other cannabinoids to the participating labs. Those laboratories will not be notified of the concentration of those compounds. Instead, they measure and send the results back to NIST with data on the slotxo methods they used to analyze.After collecting the answers, NIST publishes measurements that the laboratory received. Such information will be anonymous, so the names of each laboratory are not disclosed in accordance with the announcement. However, the results show how much variance the laboratory has.Furthermore, NIST publishes accurate measurements, so each lab will be able to see how accurate and efficient the measurements are compared to their slotxo peers.NIST research chemist Melissa Phillips said anonymity means labs don't have to worry about how their performance is being viewed.Our goal is to help improve the lab, not call them out, she said.When NIST researchers were able to verify the results, they said they would be in a better position to issue recommendations on best practice for marijuana testing. The first exercise is expected to last six months to a year.We look forward to seeing firmer numbers a second time, Wilson said.NIST noted that the CannaQAP program is of criminal importance because hemp growers have to follow a federal directive that their crops contain no more than 0.3 percent THC.The Food and Drug Administration recently submitted a report to Congress on the state of the CBD market, and the document slotxo summarizes studies the agency has conducted on the content and quality of cannabis-derived products that have been tested during this period. Six years agoThe report, which responded to an order that Congress attached to last year's appropriation law, showed significant inconsistencies between the cannabinoid concentrations listed on the label and what the product actually contained. At the same time, little evidence was found that dangerous metals and minerals were contaminating these products.New federal efforts, CannaQAP, may go beyond legal cannabis products.NIST also plans to continue exercising in the future with basically cannabis and possibly cannabis, the agency said. These exercises will involve measuring a greater number of compounds, including terpenes, the chemicals that make cannabis smell different, and the compounds people don't want in marijuana, such as medicinal mycotoxins.
