Tainan Nunes, an 18-year-old student senator from Port Yarmouth, said the “final splash” semi-official contest for D-Y seniors in Dennisport Seaview on June 11 was more about students making up for a lost time.

D-Y student leaders didn't decide until this spring whether the dance would take place – it was canceled last year when schools switched to distance learning because of the pandemic.

The students brainstormed and met with school administrators and health managers from Yarmouth and cities such as Dennis, Bruce Murphy, and Christine Keller.

When the rally restrictions began to be lifted, student leaders and administrators took the opportunity to select a covered location with sea views for 160 prom participants.

On Monday, Baker announced that restrictions on rallies would be lifted from May 29 to justify their decision.

“It's good we didn't spend $7,000 on a tent and had to pay for the food and drink on top of the tent,” Neidich said.

On the other hand, Monomoy Regional High School held a dance on Friday (May 21) in a tent in the front yard.

School officials decided that “the safest thing to do is to shut it out,” said Catherine Davok, an administrative assistant at The Monomoy Student Services Director and a senior class co-counsel.

“They want a traditional activity,” the students said in a survey. Goblins and tuxedos. We have a student who wants to be a DJ for us,” said David, whose son Andrew is a junior.

Barnstar High School, the largest public high school in the Cape, is the exception to this year's proms resumption, as is Bourne's Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School.

Parents on barns' terraces say it's a big challenge to plan a dance party for a class of about 500 students in a year, as an outbreak of coronavirus in the community has led to a temporary principal at the helm and several fulcrums turning to distance learning.
