NET qualification is mandatory for a lecturer position in universities & government colleges. The award of JRF and or Eligibility for Assistant Professor depends on the aggregate performance of the candidate in Paper-I and paper-II of UGC-NET.

UGC-NET Eligibility Criteria

Interested candidates appearing for UGC NET 2020 need to fulfill the eligibility criteria which are mentioned below:

  • Master’s degree from a recognized University preferably in subjects like Social Sciences, Humanities, Electronic Sciences, and Computer Science, etc.
  • Candidates appearing for the final year exam of Post graduation in the year 2020 can also apply.
  • Candidates should achieve a minimum of 55% of marks in the NET examination.
  • Candidates with a reservation should have at least 50% of the score in UGC-NET.
  • Candidates are required to appear for the subject of their qualifying exam only. Candidates, whose qualifying exam subject remains uncovered in the subject list mention by UGC, are required to appear in a related subject only.

UGC-NET Age Criteria

  • The minimum eligible age limit by the exam authorities has been set to 28 years for general category.
  • A relaxation of 5 years is given to the candidates from reserved categories.
  • No maximum age limit is prescribed for Lectureship or Asst. Professorship.
  • For Junior Research Fellowship; the maximum age limit will be 30 years as on 1st January 2020.
  • The LLM Degree holder gets a relaxation of 3 years. For Assistant Professor, there are no age limits prescribed.

Note: For third gender (transgender) candidates, relaxation in fee, age and qualifying criteria for NET is at par with SC/ST and other categories.

UGC NET 2020 Exam Pattern

The exam pattern comprises of 2 papers which are compulsory to attend for final selection.

For Paper 1: There will be 50 questions each comprising of 2 marks thus making the total marks 100. The duration of this paper is 1 hour and it is conducted in 2 shifts- Morning and evening.

Paper 1 will test the candidate’s ability in

  • Comprehension
  • Reasoning ability
  • General awareness
  • Divergent thinking

For Paper 2: There will be 100 questions each comprising of 2 marks thus making the total marks 200. The duration for this paper is 2 hours and like paper 1, it is conducted in Morning and evening shifts. There are generally 3 sections, the first one comprises questions from the – Logical Reasoning, General Aptitude, Graphical Analysis, and Numeric Ability, etc.

The second section consists of multiple-choice questions covering numerous topics of the related subject. For Engineering Science subject, the questions are related to Mathematics and Engineering Aptitude.

And the final section consists of comprehension questions. There will be a total of 5 subjects in the UGC NET 2020 – Atmospheric, Mathematical Sciences, Earth, Planetary Science, Ocean, Life Sciences, Chemical Sciences, and Physical Sciences.

Quick Facts on UGC-NET Exam Pattern

  • Total 150 questions will be asked in NET (Paper 1: 50 Question and Paper 2: 100 Questions). All questions are compulsory to attempt.
  • Paper I will consist of General Aptitude Questions and Paper II will have questions related to the subject selected by candidates. M
  • Hindi and English are the only options to attempt UGC NET. The choice for the paper medium can be exercised at the time of filling the form.
  • UGC-NET exam is an MCQ one. There is no negative marking in this exam and total duration of the exam is 3 hours.
