Craft whisky is a type of whiskey that has been produced by small distilleries. The craft whisky making process is much more hands-on and varied, resulting in a product that tastes different from what you might find at the liquor store. It is usually made using whole grains or malted barley, which gives it a range of flavours on the palate, including vanilla, caramel, honey and peat smoke among others.

Many people enjoy craft whisky because they can taste where it came from and what ingredients were used to produce it, unlike many other types of whisky on the market today which are mass-produced with just one flavour profile in mind to appeal to as many drinkers as possible. A good example is The Lakes Whisky collection.

There are three different types of craft whisky:

  • Single malt – Single malts represent one distillery or company producing the spirit.

  • Blended – A blend is created by mixing whiskies from more than one distillery to keep prices low while retaining flavour profiles that appeal to the market segment they’re trying to reach

  • Rye – Rye is made using at least 51% of this variety of grain which gives it an earthier taste.

The craft whiskey trend has been gaining momentum for over ten years thanks in part to people becoming more conscious of the food they eat and drink, and seeking more flavoursome products that provide an exquisite taste experience

There is no doubt that the momentum that craft whisky has gained over the years will continue into the future as well, with more and more people finding these artisan craft spirits much more palatable than the mass-produced ones. In addition, owing to the many natural ingredients used un craft spirits, they offer far more health benefits, if consumed in moderation of course.
