Assalamualaikum, dear brothers and sisters. Today, I want to share with you a deeply personal and spiritual practice that can help when you're seeking guidance for someone you love. This practice is Istikhara, a prayer for seeking goodness from Allah. It is a beautiful way to ask for divine direction when making a decision, especially in matters of the heart.
Loving someone is a profound and emotional experience, and when faced with uncertainty, it can be overwhelming. Istikhara is a way to turn to Allah, seeking His wisdom and clarity in our decisions. Whether you are considering a future with someone or dealing with challenges in your relationship, Istikhara can be a source of comfort and guidance.
What is Istikhara?
Istikhara for someone you love is a prayer for seeking Allah's guidance in making a decision. It is not just about asking for what we want but about seeking what is best for us in the eyes of Allah. It is an act of surrender, acknowledging that we may not know what is best for us and trusting Allah's infinite wisdom.
How to Perform Istikhara
Performing Istikhara is a simple yet deeply spiritual act. Here’s how you can do it:
- Perform Wudu (Ablution): Begin by purifying yourself. Perform wudu as you would for any prayer, ensuring you are in a state of physical and spiritual cleanliness.
- Pray Two Rak’ahs of Voluntary Prayer: After performing wudu, offer two rak’ahs of non-obligatory prayer with the intention of seeking guidance from Allah. This is the Salat al-Istikhara.
- Recite the Istikhara Dua: After completing the two rak’ahs, recite the Istikhara dua. This dua is a humble request for Allah’s guidance and blessings. Here is the dua in Arabic, along with its transliteration and translation:
Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَخِيرُكَ بِعِلْمِكَ وَأَسْتَقْدِرُكَ بِقُدْرَتِكَ وَأَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ الْعَظِيمِ، فَإِنَّكَ تَقْدِرُ وَلَا أَقْدِرُ، وَتَعْلَمُ وَلَا أَعْلَمُ، وَأَنْتَ عَلَّامُ الْغُيُوبِ. اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ خَيْرٌ لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي -أَوْ قَالَ: عَاجِلِ أَمْرِي وَآجِلِهِ- فَاقْدُرْهُ لِي وَيَسِّرْهُ لِي ثُمَّ بَارِكْ لِي فِيهِ، وَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ شَرٌّ لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي -أَوْ قَالَ: فِي عَاجِلِ أَمْرِي وَآجِلِهِ- فَاصْرِفْهُ عَنِّي وَاصْرِفْنِي عَنْهُ وَاقْدُرْ لِيَ الْخَيْرَ حَيْثُ كَانَ ثُمَّ رَضِّنِي.
Transliteration: Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi'ilmik. Wa astaqdiruka biqudratik. Wa as'aluka min fadlikal-‘azim. Fa innaka taqdiru wala aqdiru. Wa ta'lamu wala a'lamu. Wa anta ‘allamul ghuyub. Allahumma in kunta ta'lamu anna hadhal-amra khairun li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa ‘aqibati amri – (or say) fi ‘ajili amri wa ajilihi – faqdurhu li wa yassirhu li thumma barik li fihi. Wa in kunta ta'lamu anna hadhal-amra sharrun li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa ‘aqibati amri – (or say) fi ‘ajili amri wa ajilihi – fasrifhu ‘anni was-rifni ‘anhu waqdur li alkhaira haythu kan thumma ardini.
Translation: O Allah, I seek Your guidance by virtue of Your knowledge, and I seek ability by virtue of Your power, and I ask of You from Your immense favor. For You have power, I have none. And You know, I know not. You are the Knower of hidden things. O Allah, if in Your knowledge, this matter (mention the matter here) is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and my affairs, immediate and future, then ordain it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. And if in Your knowledge, it is bad for me and for my religion, my livelihood, and my affairs, immediate and future, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and ordain for me the good wherever it may be, and make me pleased with it.
Seeking Guidance for Someone You Love
When performing Istikhara for someone you love, it’s important to be specific about the matter in your dua. Mention their name and the situation you are seeking guidance for. Trust that Allah knows what is in your heart and will guide you towards what is best.
Be Patient and Trust in Allah
After performing Istikhara, it’s crucial to be patient. Answers may come in different forms – through dreams, feelings, or events that unfold. Trust in Allah’s wisdom and timing. Sometimes, the answer may not be what you hoped for, but have faith that it is what’s best for you.
