Mason Greenwood's Man Utd contract may have been ‘secretly extended', Getafe believe

Mason Greenwood hasn't played for Manchester United in over two years but his current club Getafe believe his contract with the Red Devils may have been secretly extended

Mason Greenwood's Manchester United contract may have been extended, according to La Liga side Getafe.

The 22-year-old last played for the Premier League giants in January 2022 which was when he was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault. While the charges were dropped, the Englishman never returned to the United squad with the club fearing a major backlash after initially considering his reintegration in the team.

Deciding against permanently selling him, the club instead sent him out on loan to Getafe for the 2023/24 season where he's netted six goals and contributed five assists in 25 league games.

Sky Sports is bringing you 500 live football games to watch, as well access to Cricket, Golf, F1, Boxing, NFL, NBA and more across eight dedicated channels. Sky Sports is the only way to watch all the action this year.

With his contract set to expire in the summer of 2025, United retain a clause in Greenwood's contract that allows them to trigger a one-year extension until 2026 and it's one Getafe believe United may have already put to use, according to The Athletic.

The Spanish side believe the contract clause has already been triggered by United due to talks had with the club which had them understanding that his contract will run until 2026.

The club have insisted that no decision regarding his contract has yet to be made as they are able to activate the option up until May 2025. Sir Jim Ratcliffe previously spoke about the potential of Greenwood returning to his boyhood club as he confirmed a decision on his future will be made.

“All I can do is talk about the principle of how we will approach decisions like that,” the Brit billionaire said. “Is he the right type of footballer, are we happy with if he is a good person or not? He’s a Manchester United footballer, so we are in charge of football.”

In his four years of active playing time for Man United, Greenwood racked up 129 appearances and bagged 35 goals as his impressive performances even saw him achieve his England debut in 2020 which has since been his only cap for his country.
