Abe was not your average politician. Abe was an uncommon politician who saw Japan in the 21st Century as an economic power and could also make meaningful contributions to the Indo-Pacific political issues. After a brief spell in 2007, Abe's message to Japan was clear: “Japan has back” This was a reflection of Japan's newfound confidence in itself and its role as a global watchdog, rather than just being an observer. He was especially interested in Japan’s defense and securityin an ever-changing environment. This involved reviewing the pacifist Constitution and the role of self defense forces. He also sought to strengthen the collective security in the extended neighbourhood. He saw new opportunities that would increase Japan’s importance, and he was also able to believe in it.

Abe listened carefully to Prime Minister Modi’s vision that Japan would play a key role in India's development aspirations. He joined forces with Modi in support of flagship initiatives such as Make In India or Skill India. Japan became the most important source of foreign investments. Naval cooperation flourished due to Japan's regular participation at the Malabar Exercise. Exercises between ground forces were also initiated under his supervision.

He was an outstanding Japanese statesman, a great global stateman, and a strong advocate for Indo-Japan friendship. Japan and the entire world have lost a visionary stateman and a dear friend. In 2007, I was the Chief minister of Gujarat and met him for the first-ever time. Our friendship has grown beyond the boundaries of office protocol and formalities since that first meeting.

In reminiscing on old memories, PM Modi stated that visiting Toji Temple, Kyoto, our Shinkansen train ride, our visit at Sabarmati Ashram, Ahmedabad, Ganga Aarti, Kashi, and elaborate tea ceremonies in Tokyo are just a few of the many memorable moments. Our personal bonds remained strong despite all this. Modi also said that it was an honor to work with him in bringing about an unprecedented transformation of the strategic partnership between India-Japan. He also mentioned the PM Padma Vibhushan and said that he was given the prestigious Padma Vibhushan for his contributions to India-Japan relations in 2021. He added that he will be remembered for his wisdom, friendship, and guidance. The PM also offered his deepest condolences for his family.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankarcondemned Friday's death of Shinzo Abe, the former Japanese Prime Minister. He said it was a terrible day for Japan and the entire world. Jaishankar tweeted that it was a sad day in Japan, India, the globe, and for him personally.

How did Abe come to power?

Abe, the son of Shintaro Abe and grandson of Nobusuke Kishi, was born into a political family. Abe realized his mission was to carry on the legacy of his forefathers, to make Japan great, strong and a force to reckon with on the international stage.

He was instrumental in establishing the political dominance for the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Abe was elected first to Parliament in 1993. He became Chief Cabinet Secretary in 2005. His rapid rise to the top was remarkable. He became a prominent leader and became the youngest Prime Minister of post-war Japan.

In July 2007, the LDP suffered heavy losses in the elections to the upper house. In September 2012, Abe resigned as prime minister due to colitis. However, in 2012 Abe said that he had recovered from the illness with the help medicine. In 2014 and 2017, he was elected again as Japan’s longest-serving prime minister.

What was Abenomics, you ask?

Abe's signature economic plan was actually a set policies that he introduced in 2012. He planned to use the “Three Arrows”of Abenomics in order to lift Japan's economy from a two-decade-long stagnation and transform it. He was the leader of “Abenomics”, a comprehensive package of policies that aims at strengthening Japan by recovering the economy from the deflation and maintaining fiscal discipline.

Monetary policy: Japan's ultra-easy monetary policy made it easier for companies and consumers to borrow money and spend it in the form negative short-term rates.

Fiscal stimuli: The government injects money into the economy by spending more on infrastructure and giving financial incentives to companies like tax breaks.

Structure reforms: Corporate Reforms, including adding more women to work, labor liberization and allowing more immigrants to join the workforce to reduce labor shortages and promote economic growth.

These policies were so popular that Abe and his LDP party returned to power in 2012. However, his efforts were met with a significant challenge in 2020 when the country went back into recession.

Did Abenomics Work?

His most prominent policy was “Abenomics”, which is his name. Abe was elected to office in 2012, when Japan was in severe recession. Abenomics was seen by many as a way to help Japan return back to growth. Abenomics was a successful exercise in political branding. However, it did not achieve Abe's main economic goal. Japan faced the daunting task of revitalizing its once-dynamic economy. It was in great recession when his government came to power. Although Abenomics was able to spur growth, it wasn't at the same pace as the country experienced during its post-war boom. Many economists credit Abe with putting the country in a better position to resist economic shocks like the pandemic.
