Blockbuster releases from Marvel may have been put on hold, but there are still a few series with superhero content that will be hitting our television screens. 

On the other hand, if you’re looking to get into the Halloween spirit, there are plenty of horror shows available. Romance is also on the menu for those who thrive on romantic escapism.


So, grab your popcorn and settle in. Here is a list of 10 shows that you should see in October.

The Haunting of Bly Manor (a.k.a. Hill House season two) 

The Haunting of Hill House was both spooky and addictive, and the next chapter, The Haunting of Bly Manor, promises to be as engaging. Mike Flanagan, the creator of Hill House, and producer Trevor Macy teamed up to create this horror series. The cast includes Victoria Pedretti, Henry Thomas, T’Nia Miller, and Rahul Kohli. 

Based loosely on Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw,” we are transported to England to another mysterious mansion burdened with tragedies. The Haunting of Bly Manor premiers on Netflix on 9 October. The trailer was definitely chilling.

Emily in Paris 

Darren Starr, who is behind series like Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, and Sex and the City, created Emily in Paris. The series stars Lily Collins, Ashley Park, and Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu. Lily, an often underrated actress, finally gets the opportunity to showcase her talent as Emily Cooper.

The storyline is the kind of perfect mindless escape from reality needed currently. The series follows Emily who explores new friendships and love when she sets out to work in Paris. Season one premiered on 1 October on Netflix.

The Good Lord Bird 

Based on James McBride’s novel of the same name, The Good Lord Bird stars Ethan Hawke as the fire-and-brimstone abolitionist John Brown, and Joshua Caleb Johnson as the slave boy, Onion. 

The drama, set in the 1850s, is related from Onion's point of view when he becomes a member of Brown's motley crew of abolitionist soldiers. It is a loose retelling of history and the abolitionists’ fight to end slavery in Kansas. The limited series premiered on 4 October on Showtime.

Soulmates 

Brett Goldstein and co-creator William Bridges crafted the anthology series Soulmates. The cast includes Charlie Heaton, Betsy Brandt, Ronke Adekoluejo, Malin Akerman, and Gabriel Andreu.

Soulmates is a Sci-Fi series based in the future – 15 years to be exact – when science has made a remarkable discovery. It can tell you who your soulmate is. Season one premiered on 5 October on AMC. 

Monsterland 

Monsterland, adapted from a book of short stories by Nathan Ballingrud titled North American Lake Monsters, is a fantasy horror with Gothic beasts including werewolves and fallen angels. The stars of the show include Kaitlin Dever, Sol Marina Crespo, and Joy Osmanski

Season one premiered on 2 October on Hulu. 

Helstrom 

While Marvel blockbuster releases may be on hold for 2020, there are still a few Marvel series on television to look out for. Helstrom is one of them. Based on comic book characters Daimon and Ana Helstrom, Helstrom was created by  Paul Zbyszewski, who also worked on the Lost and Daybreak series. 

The Hulu series stars Tom Austen and Sydney Lemmon and offers a darker twist to the Marvel lore we’ve seen onscreen over the years. The show follows the siblings as they hunt down the worst of humankind. Season one premieres on 16 October. 

The Undoing 

David E Kelley, creator of Big Little Lies, new release The Undoing is finally seeing the light of day after a delay due to COVID-19. Nicole Kidman, Hugh Grant, and Noah Jupe star in this series based on Jean Hanff Korelitz’s novel You Should Have Known.

The HBO drama follows a successful therapist, Grace, her devoted husband, Jonathan, and their private-schooled son. Grace’s perfect life gets turned upside down after a violent incident. The show premieres later this month on 25 October.

Good Morning, Verônica 

Based on the novel of the same name by Raphael Montes and Ilana Casoy, this Brazilian crime-mystery drama stars Tainá Müller, Camila Morgado, and Eduardo Moscovis. 

Good Morning, Verônica follows the story of a São Paulo homicide police clerk, Verônica Torres (Tainá Müller), who decides to investigate two neglected cases involving abused women. A shocking suicide also dredges up some painful memories. The Portuguese language series premiered on 1 October on Netflix.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond 

The Walking Dead franchise’s third new series, World Beyond, focuses on the first generation to grow up in the zombie apocalypse. Scott M. Gimple and Matthew Negrete created the series, which stars Aliyah Royale, Nico Tortorella, and Annet Mahendru. 

The story unfolds when a group of teenagers receives a message that causes them to leave their home's safety to look for their father. The series premiered on 4 October on AMC.

The Mandalorian 

Nominated for Best Drama series at the 2020 Emmys, The Mandalorian season two promises to be as impressive as the first season. And the second season of this Star Wars TV series created by Jon Favreau sees fan-favorite Baby Yoda back. Pedro Pascal stars alongside newcomers Michael Biehn, Timothy Olyphant, and Katee Sackhoff. Carl Weathers and Gina Carano are also back for more action.

Season two will see everyone still searching for the Child who is protected by Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), the bounty hunter, as they continue their quest from season one. The duo rally allies while fighting enemies. Season two premieres on 30 October on Disney+.
