The classic among designer chairs: Barcelona

But Ghery was not the only architect to have designed an iconic chair. The German architect and director of the Bauhaus Mies Van der Rohe, designed in 1929 the Barcelona chair for the German pavilion of the universal exhibition that was held that year in Barcelona. This armchair, whose shape is based on the sella curulis used by Roman magistrates, has become a cult design due to its harmonious proportions and elegant shape.

The representative Wassily Chair

Another representative figure of the Bauhaus, Marcel Breuer, director of its cabinetmaking workshop, designed in 1926 his Model B3, better known as the Wassily chair. This revolutionary chair made of chromed steel tubes and leather seats owes its name to the fact that Breuer made a duplicate of this chair for the acclaimed painter Wassily Kandinsky, who was simultaneously teaching at the Bauhaus.

The minimal Stool 60

Nor can it be missing from this list of unique seats, the 60 stool designed by the Finnish designer and architect Alvar Aalto in 1933, consisting of three curved wooden legs and a circular seat. This stool, which has become one of the great icons of Nordic design, is manufactured and distributed by the Finnish furniture company Artek.

The lightweight Butterfly Chair

And we come to the only Spanish representation in this selection, the Butterfly chair, also known as BFK, created by the Barcelona designer Antoni Bonet I Castellana in Buenos Aires in 1938. It was designed in iron and leather emulating the shape of a butterfly. and based on the design of the trampolines used by the English army.

The cozy Ball Chair

An icon of industrial design and the only chair capable of characterizing the aesthetics of the 60s in an object is the Ball chair, also known as the balloon chair, designed in 1936 by Finn Eero Aarnio. Defined as a room within a room, this ball-shaped chair provides the user with a feeling of isolation and relaxation and manages to transport us to the universe of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The iconic chair of the Diamond design

Another seating essential is the Diamond chair  (also known as the 421LU chair)  designed in 1950 by American designer  Harry Bertoia and produced by Knoll. This chair is built only with welded, curved, and chromed steel rods, reminiscent of the shape of a diamond, and due to the complexity of its structure, it is easier to manufacture them by hand than mechanized. This seat is usually covered with a cushion or a fabric lining for greater comfort.

The simplicity of the Elbow Chair

A name cannot be missing from this list, that of Hans J. Wegner, the king of chairs. This Danish designer created more than 500 designer chairs throughout his career, but his most outstanding design is the Elbow chair, for the Danish firm Carl Hansen & Son, a wooden chair with a simple and attractive design that has guaranteed him a place in this selection.

The Nordic Lilla Åland Chair

The Lilla Åland chair, designed in 1942 by Carl Mamsten and manufactured by Stolab, is the greatest exponent of Swedish furniture design, and an essential piece if we want to give a room that Nordic essence that the simple lines of this wooden chair can contribute.

The icon of magazine designer chairs: the Louis Ghost

Also, the design genius Phillip Stark (re) created a chair that will go down in history, the Louis Ghost chair. This one-piece polycarbonate chair was designed by Stark for the Italian manufacturer Kartel in 2002, being a modern reinvention of the Louis XVI Baroque design chairs, giving it a new phantasmagoric quality as it is made of transparent polycarbonate.
