The Difference Between Baptists and Lutherans

1. The Foundations – Martin Luther and John Smyth

In the beginning, there were two reformers. Martin Luther, the passionate German monk, father of the Reformation, and founder of the Lutheran faith, boldly nailed his 95 Theses to the church door in Wittenberg in 1517. On the other hand, we have John Smyth, a key figure in the Baptist movement, who in the early 17th century, gathered a group of separatist believers in the Netherlands to establish a new church. So, from the get-go, we see that these two denominations are rooted in the spirit of reform and change.

2. Salvation – By Faith Alone or Faith and Works?

One central aspect of Christian belief is the concept of salvation. In this realm, we see some key differences between Lutherans and Baptists.

Lutherans passionately believe in sola fide or “faith alone” as the means of salvation. According to Martin Luther, salvation is a free gift from God, and it cannot be earned through good works. Let’s take a look at what the Bible has to say: For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Baptists, while sharing the belief in salvation by grace through faith, place a greater emphasis on the role of personal responsibility and works in the believer’s life. They often reference the book of James, where it is written: What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? (James 2:14)

3. Baptism – Infant or Believer?

Lutherans believe in infant baptism, wherein the child is welcomed into the Christian community and God’s grace is bestowed upon them. Lutherans base their practice on passages such as: Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these. (Matthew 19:14)

In contrast, Baptists hold the belief that baptism should be reserved for believers who have made a personal confession of faith. They argue that baptism is an outward expression of an inward change and often reference this verse: Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. (Mark 16:16)
