Every year someone declares a revolution. Cloud. Mobile-first. AI. It gets old. But 2026 is genuinely a weird moment, not because one big thing is changing, but because a bunch of things are changing at the same time, and they reinforce each other in ways that make the usual "wait and see" approach riskier than it used to be.

For tech leaders, the question isn't really whether to pay attention. It's which of these shifts hit your organization first, and whether you've thought about them before they become urgent.

Nobody is debating whether AI belongs in software development anymore. It's in code editors, test suites, CI/CD pipelines. The real question is the one worth time in leadership meetings is how deep to let it go and where you still need a human looking at the output.

If that industry has figured out how to run this compliantly, the "we're not ready" argument gets harder to make in less regulated contexts.

Supply chains tell a similar story. AI-driven forecasting and real-time inventory tracking have moved from pilot projects to operational requirements at large enterprises, not because companies wanted to move fast, but because finding out about a disruption after it's already a crisis is too expensive.

The model has none of that context and won't flag that it's missing any of it. It produces something plausible. Often that's fine. Low-code works for internal tools, workflow automation, and situations where iteration speed matters more than architectural control. It doesn't work well for systems that need to be highly reliable, deeply customized, or heavily audited. Forcing it there creates technical debt that developers end up untangling anyway.

The honest filter: team size, industry, compliance requirements, and how custom your product actually needs to be. Most organizations aren't doing all ten of these things and shouldn't be. The useful question is which two or three would actually change something for you this year.
