The right drills can help you become fast, accurate, and ready for any malfunctions that could pop up. Here are a few options you can try the next time you head to the range.
Practice Clearing Malfunctions
One of the most important drills you can practice is clearing malfunctions. You will want to start the drill in the ready position with your firearm of choice. No matter how well you use your pistol cleaning kit, the ammo itself could result in a malfunction.
You can use an empty brass case or snap cap to simulate a complication when shooting. Get the casing caught in the slide to simulate a classic stovepipe malfunction. Then, eject the mag and pull the slide back. Tilt the ejection port down, and when it’s clear, reload the gun and fire. The rifle drill is similar, with the bolt instead of the slide. On a tubular mag shotgun, pull the pump or slide to the back. You might need to reach in and clear the shell. Finish by adding another round to the chamber and firing.
The Tap-Rack
Another failure-to-fire exercise is the Tap-Rack. Start with a mag loaded with a mix of dummy and real rounds. Make sure dummy rounds aren’t loaded next to each other. Fire until you come to a dummy round. When you hear only a click and no bang, tap the mag to ensure it’s seated. Rack the slide, cycling a new round. Fire the round. This drill can also be done dry.
The Ragged Hole
Test your accuracy with your favorite pistol or rifle with a Ragged Hole drill. Start about 3 yards away and choose a spot on your target. When you’re ready, fire between three and five rounds at your target spot. You want to aim for the exact same spot each time, making only a single hole. If your shooting skills aren’t quite that advanced, try to make holes in a tight spread. With the goal of a single, ragged hole, you can sharpen your fundamentals.
Shoot Two, Load Two
Break out the shotgun cleaner because this drill is specifically for shotguns, and you will want to do it multiple times. That means your shotgun will be ready for a cleaning by the time you’re finished. Start about 10 yards from your target, which could be a clay pigeon on a berm. Load two rounds and keep at least two more rounds on hand, ready to be reloaded. Shoot two rounds and then reload two shells with your non-dominant hand. Keep the shotgun pointed at the target while reloading. You can repeat this drill as many times as you like to improve your reload speed.
