The Drug Rehabilitation Centre in India stated that drug abuse is wholesomely spread across the reigns of India, and majorly across the state of Punjab. It is the only state which once transmitted a strong drug route from Afghanistan and Pakistan, and has a strong consumer base, mainly capturing the teenage population. Thus, the Drug Rehabilitation Centre in Pune stated the major 5 facts which one should know about drug abuse in India. They are as follows:

  • As when the Punjab government commissioned a drug abuse study in the year of 2015, it was found that approximately 2,30,000 people in the state of Punjab were all drug users, which then translated to be 836 drug users, which means users per 100,000 people in the state. The All India number therefore standed to be 250 per head, which stands to be 100,000 in 2012, specifically stated by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. Even the figure of 250 drug abusers per 100,000 is also known to be very high as compared not to other states but to several other companies.

  • In India, the use of heroin, opium and cannabis, are the most commonly consumed drugs with an increasing prevalence of methamphetamine. This number of users who were found injecting drugs has also been gone up since at a very higher rate, where with around 1 million heroin users were found across India, which was based accordingly to a report of United Nations. However, the unofficial estimate was to be suggested at 5 million which was then considered to be a much truer and accurate figure.

  • Now, according to the National Survey on Extent and Pattern of Substance Use in India, mainly in 2019, about 2.1% of the country’s population which mainly stands to be 2.26 crore uses opioids which may include the consumption of opium, which in India is known to be doda or phukki, with its variants to be poppy husk. After opioids, heroin and pharmaceutical opioids are the second consumed.

  • The National Survey of 2019, therefore showcased that about 2.8% of Indians who consume loosely as between the age group of 10-75 years, which means approximately 3.1 crore individuals, were found using cannabis included in either bhang, ganja or in the form of charas, where approximately 0.66% people have used cannabis as their addiction.

  • As we move to the last fact, the Drug Rehabilitation Centre in Pune, stated the alarming number of suicide cases because of the drug abuse and also because of the serious alcohol addiction, which has been doubled in the last decade in the history of India. In the year of 2010, approximately, 3,343 cases of suicides were nationally reported, among which the numbers increased to being till 7,860 suicides in the year of 2019.
