You're about to start your first escape room and have no idea what to expect. Don't worry, we've got you covered. Here are some observations and tips from an escape room Games Master, as well as the most common mistakes made by new escapists.

SELECT A LEADER
The people on the least successful teams aren't stupid. They simply haven't gelled as a unit yet. Avoid wrangling and have someone who can assign tasks and effectively coordinate your group.

SPLIT UP AND SEARCH FOR INDICATORS
A common mistake that new groups make is huddling together over a single puzzle.
Not only will having too many fingers in the pie make the puzzle more difficult to solve, but you may also miss other important clues in the room. Splitting up allows you to cover more ground while saving time!

PARTNER WITH THE TEAM
The escape games rely heavily on communication. If you work alone or in small groups, make sure others are aware of your activities and inform them of any significant objects. Talk, but also listen; your friends may be able to solve your problem.

IF AT FIRST, YOU FAIL… PERHAPS TRY SOMETHING ELSE
They say that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. If you've tried and failed to solve the puzzle using the same strategy, it's time to try something new. The process of elimination can frequently work in your favour!

EXPECT THE UNPREDICTABLE
Some rooms will guide you from puzzle to puzzle in a systematic manner. In other cases, the next puzzle/clue will necessitate thinking outside the box. You may be required to search the room, including behind picture frames, bookshelves, and under rugs (while remaining respectful of the room's décor/props and using common sense). Or you may need to use other senses, such as listening for audio clues and feeling (or even smelling!) items in the room.
During the briefing, pay close attention to your game master. There may be story elements that will be useful, and keep an eye out for details and hints from earlier stages of the game that may pay off later. But, keeping that in mind…

DON'T OVER-ANALYZE IT
Overthinking is the most common mistake that both new and experienced players make. The answer, like any riddle, is usually right in front of you. Start with the simplest logic and work your way up!

DRESS CONVENIENTLY
Despite the fact that this is a logic game, you may be required to perform some physical activities. You will frequently need to look for clues on the floor, crawl, or jump, so be prepared. Simple jeans, a T-shirt, and flat shoes will suffice.

HAVE A GOOD TIME
Last but not least, have a good time. Don't be concerned about the number of clues you'll use or whether or not you'll be able to escape. The most important thing is that you have a good time with your family or friends.
