Shear Nuts are conical nuts with coarse threads that are used in permanent installations where it is important to avoid tampering with the fastener assembly. The way shear nuts are fitted gives them their name. Installing them does not necessitate the use of any special tools; nevertheless, removing them will be difficult, if not impossible. Each nut is made up of a conical part with a thin, threadless standard hex nut on top that breaks or shears off when torque surpasses a specified point on the nut. The finished product looks similar to a Tri-Groove or Trident Nut, but it lacks the grooves for installation and removal.
Shear Nuts are often used to fasten various equipment and prevent unwanted removal on signs in hospitals, public areas, playgrounds, schools, and correctional facilities.
