Everest base camp trek is an ideal trekking itinerary, that is followed by most trekkers. It has an opportunity to see the panoramic Himalayas, wildlife and more through an adventure journey to the Everest base camp.

The journey to the Everest base camp begins from Kathmandu with a small aircraft to Lukla. It takes around 30-35 minutes with a great view of the Himalayas, green hills and beautiful landscape. Once you reach Lukla, the journey goes ahead to Phakding on your first-day trek. Then you trek to Namche Bazaar on the second day where you will spend one more night for the altitude practice. You will trek to Lobuche on the seventh day after Dingboche and finally, you reach the base camp on the eighth day which is your special day.

Detailed Itinerary of EBC Trek

Day 01: Fly to Lukla for 35- minutes and trek to Phakding-3hrs.

This is your first day going towards the Everest base camp with an adventurous scenic flight from Kathmandu. The flights usually operate in the morning because of clear visibility and no wind. You will fly for about half an hour to 35 minutes from Kathmandu. Enjoying the view of Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Gaurishankar and Number Himalayan ranges, you will land at Lukla airport.

Lukla airport is located on a small hill station right above a cliff and a wall blocked the end of the runway. After landing, you start your journey crossing Lukla. There is an office of the Pasang Lhamu rural municipality where you can issue your area entry ticket. The cost of this entry ticket is 2000 NPR. After issuing your permit, you trek downhill at the beginning.

After walking for about 30 minutes, you will be in Chheplung village. Passing Chheplung and walking about another half an hour, you will have again descend part for another 15 minutes and cross a high suspension bridge. Descending continuously to the Thadokoshi River, you will see some well-carved rocks with the Tibetan Buddhist mantras and cross a short bridge over the Thadokoshi River.

You will have to ascend part for about 15 minutes after the bridge then walks on the flat for a few minutes and reach Ghat village. Now, takes to a small monastery and a Buddhist stupa on the top of this village then the trail is easy going for another half an hour to Phakding. After spending your first night in this place with an adventure dream of reaching the base camp of the world’s highest mountain, go further the next day.

Day 02: Phakding to Namche Bazaar Trek – 6-7 hrs

Phakding is located 2610m above sea level and you will trek to Namche Bazar taking 6-7 hrs. The elevation of Namche Bazaar is 3440m so you will gain 830m altitude today. The walking distance from Phakding to Namche is 12km.

You will start your trek after your breakfast at the guest house where you stay. Walking about 5 minutes from your lodge, you will cross a suspension bridge over the Dudhkoshi River and trek to Zamfute. You will reach Zamfute in half an hour from Phakding. Here, you cross a small bridge over Ghattekhola and see a small hydropower station then ascend to Tok Tok village. Passing some small grocery shops, you will see a beautiful waterfall before starting one ascending part.

You will see the beautiful shape of Mt. Thamserku after the view of a waterfall and trek another half an hour to Benkar. You will cross a bridge again and reach Chomuwa and Monjo villages. The Sagarmatha national park begins from Monjo and now, you need to issue a national park entry permit here. It costs 3000 NPR for the permit. But the cost of the permit for the south Asian trekkers costs only 1500 NPR.

After issuing the national park entry permit, you descend about 10 minutes and cross another bridge that connects to Jorsalle. You will reach 15 minutes from the Permit counter to Jorsalle and have lunch. You will cross the next bridge and trek through the riverbank then climb 20 minutes to the highest bridge. This is the last bridge you cross today and climb towards Namche Bazaar. Ascending part here is about 2-3 hrs and you will see Mt. Everest from halfway climbing on a clear day.

Namche Bazaar is one of the most beautiful villages along the Everest base camp trekking trail. You can enjoy hot drinks and bakeries, the movie in bars, play pool and visit some souvenir shops after you rest for a while.

Day 03: Rest and acclimatization hike day in Namche

This is like a relaxed day though, you will hike a couple of hours for the altitude practice. You will hike to the Everest view hotel which takes around 3 hrs to go and come back. You will walk 3km today and make 240m elevation changes.

Day 04: Namche Bazaar to Tengboche trek 5-6 hrs

It starts with beautiful days of the Everest base camp trek after Namche Bazaar. You will walk about 5-6 hrs through an open view and a clear trail. Reaching Tengboche from Namche Bazaar, you will make a 12km journey with 420m ascend.

You will start the journey that you already visited on the acclimatization day hike at the beginning until the top of Namche village and take right on a flat part. This trail is maintained by an old man whom you might see staying on the side of the trail and offering some donations from you to maintain the trail.

You will reach Kyanjuma after walking around 2 and half hours from Namche Bazaar and walk 10 more minutes to Sanasa. From here, the trail to the Gokyo lake trekking trail divides. You will trek downwards another hour to Phunkitengka and stop for lunch.

You need to take enough drinking water from your lunch place. There is no place to buy water before you reach Tengboche. It takes 2 hours from your lunch place to Tengboche and the trail is steep up. Day 05: Tengboche to Dingboche trek 5-6 hrs

This is another beautiful day that all the time you will have an open mountain view. You will be above the tree line during the whole day trek. You will walk about 5-6 hrs and walk a 12 km distance. The altitude difference from Tengboche to Dingboche is 550 m ascent.

After enjoying a stunning view in the morning from Tengboche hill, you will have breakfast and trek downwards to Deboche. It takes about 30 minutes to get to Deboche and you will walk on a flat part for another half an hour and cross a bridge. Right after crossing this bridge, you will start ascending for about 30 minutes and walk another 20 minutes to get to Pangboche village. Trekking about an hour more from Pangboche, you will reach Somare and stop for lunch. After lunch, you will trek for about 45 minutes where you meet a junction to go to Pheriche and Dingboche. Here, you will take the right trail and cross a small short bridge over Khumbu Khola and ascend about half an hour and walk on a flat part finally another 15 minutes to get to Dingboche village. This is the highest proper Sherpa village in the Everest base camp trekking trail.

Day 06: The Second Rest day in Dingboche

This is the second special day that you will have a great view with an acclimatization hike. You will hike to Nangkar-Tsang hill above Dingboche village. The total hiking distance is 2-3km with 590m altitude gain and the hike is about 3-4 hrs.

After your breakfast, you will start your hike towards Nangkat-Tsang hill. You will see 2 high mountains above 8 thousand meters which are Lhotse and Makalu. This is the fourth highest mountain in Nepal and fifth in the world. It is not in the Everest Himalayas but still, you can see it. Including these big mountains, you will see lots of other beautiful peaks with your hike and back to Dingboche for your lunchtime.

Day 07: Dingboche to Lobuche trek 5 hrs

You will walk about 5 hrs with ascending 500m and trek 12km in distance today. You need to be a little bit careful about the altitude problem because oxygen is less in the air and atmospheric pressure will be high around this area.

You trek through a ridge keeping Pheriche valley on your left downwards. The trail looks fairly easy walking on the ridge in fact; it is not easy with altitude. Walking about 3 hrs, you will reach Thukla enjoying open Mountain View. You will see lots of Yak along the trail today. Thukla has 2 lodges where you will have lunch and climb on Thukla pass. There are numerous monuments of dead climbers on the top of Thuk La pass. You can take some photographs of monuments and stunning Mountain views from here and trek forward to Lobuche. Here, the trail goes gradual flat for another hour.

Day 08: Lobuche to EBC trek via Gorakshep 7-8 hrs

Wow! This is your special day because you are reaching the main destination. You would be suffering for a few days for this day. You will be heading to the base camp today. This is a big day of trek too so you will walk 15km in 7-8 hrs trek and ascend 454 meters elevation.

You will start your trek quite the early morning from Lobuche and trek to Gorakshep. It takes about 3 hrs to reach Gorakshep. You will cross a small glacier on the way keeping the big Khumbu glacier on your right. Once you reach Gorakshep, you will drop off your bag in your room and have a quick lunch then hike towards the base camp.

You need to wear warm equipment, take a camera and water to the base camp. You stay power junket for half an hour on a tiresome part and walk through the rough trail until the base camp. There are a lot of short up and downhill trails with rocks. You will be enjoying the great view along the way but can’t see Mt. Everest from the base camp. It takes around 2 to 2 and a half hours one way to reach the base camp and at the same time to return to Gorakshep.

Day 09: Kala Patthar hike in the morning and Trek to Pheriche 7 hrs

This day offers you a great panoramic view of the Everest Himalaya from Kala Patthar. You will hike about two hrs to Kala Patthar which is 5550m elevation. Then you hike back to the lodge in Gorakshep and trek to Pheriche. Today, you will make an 18km distance in total and descend 370m.

You will hike very early morning to Kalapatthar from Gorakshep and enjoy the view then hike back to the lodge. Here, you will have your breakfast and start your trek back to Pheriche. First, you will cross the glacier which you would pass on the way up from Lobuche. You will arrive back in Lobuche by walking 2 hrs and another hour to Thukla. LeavingThukla behind, you will meet a junction to Dingboche and Pheriche. You will take the trail right to the valley which goes to Pheriche. You will be walking with the wind facing you in this valley. Pheriche is a windy valley and a cold place.

Day 10: Pheriche to Namche trek 7 hrs

This is another long day trek. You will finish 22km today from Pheriche to Namche Bazaar. It looks very long distance but the trail descends 770m and walks mostly on the flat area.

You will start your day a bit earlier because you are going to trek a long day. You have a small hill pass known as Pheriche pass and trek down to Somare in about 2 hrs. Then you will trek to Pangboche in an hour where you will be back in the tree line. Descending from Pangboche, you will cross a bridge and trek on a flat area in Deboche and climb half an hour to Tengboche hill. Here, you will descend to the river taking an hour and a half and cross a bridge again. Right after crossing this bridge, you will start ascending to Sanasa and trek to Kyangjuma. You will trek 2 hours and a half more on a nice and clear trail to Namche Bazaar from Kyangjuma.

Day 11: Namche Bazaar to Lukla trek 7 hrs

This is you’re the last day walking day of the Everest base camp trek. You will descend at 700m altitudes in total taking 7 hours walk. You will descend 500m to Phakding and ascend 200m to Lukla. This day is long so you will make 21km in distance.

After having breakfast in your lodge, you will start your journey to Lukla. First, you will descend through a big hill pass a police check post and cross the highest bridge. You will arrive in Monjo within 2 hrs walk from Namche and check out your permit and trek to Banker in another hour. You will reach Phakding for lunch and ascend 3 hrs more to Lukla. Here, you can visit some bars and bakeries and celebrate your last night's mountain stay.

Day 12: Fly out to Kathmandu 30 minutes

Today, you will fly back to Kathmandu in the early morning. You will have a quick breakfast at the lodge and go to the airport. You come back to the city after visiting the mountain with a great adventure experience. Here you can rest and visit some bars to celebrate your trek and visit some souvenir shops to buy some gifts from Nepal for your friends and relatives.

Lukla Airport

Lukla airport is a small airport with a short runway. You will reach here with a short scenic flight from Kathmandu and the trek begins at the Everest base camp. This airport is known as one of the most dangerous airports in the world. Located at an altitude of 2840m elevation above sea level, most trekkers use this airport as a gateway to Everest. An adventurous flight to this airport offers a beautiful view of the high Himalayas, green hills and attractive landscapes.

Namche Bazaar

The name of this town is Namche and famous as Namche Bazaar nowadays because there will be a weekly market which is held from Friday to Saturday noon. The market is known as Bazaar so this weekly market gave another name Namche Bazaar to Namche. This is a place where trekkers will have the first acclimatization rest day before visiting higher elevations. It is the most beautiful Sherpa village along the way to Everest base camp. Namche Bazaar has numerous lodges, bars, bakeries, mountain gear shops, inns, and groceries. Visiting some viewpoints like the national park headquarter and the Everest view hotel for panoramic Mountain View, monastery and museum during your rest day are good in this place.

Tengboche Monastery

Tengboche monastery is located on the Tengboche hill surrounded by forest all around. But the hill is with an open view of panoramic mountains including Mt. Everest. This is a great viewpoint to see Mt. Amadablam. Tengboche monastery is an old and historical Buddhist monastery.
