If you want to know the names of the two most ordered drinks in cafes across the globe, that are espresso-based, then the answers would be flat white and caffe latte. But, do you know the differences between the two and how choosing one over the other can make a difference? Well, we’re about to find out in this comprehensive guide. So, let’s jump in without much fuss.

All About Caffe Latte

According to a well-known cafe offering delicious food in Whangarei, latte or caffe latte is simply an espresso-based beverage that contains 1-2 espressos along with lightly-steamed milk. Generally, caffe latte is served in a tall glass but nowadays you can find the beverage being served in a big-sized cup.

Furthermore, the amount of espresso used has also increased over the years. Traditionally, caffe latte should contain only one espresso and the quantity should be 250 ml. However, nowadays the quantity has increased to 350 ml and the number of espressos provided is also two.

The feature that's similar between a flat white and caffe latte is the amount of foam that's used. Both of them contain less foam than a cappuccino. Besides, the cup or glass in which the beverage is served also dictates the amount of foam that is provided. Traditionally, the below-mentioned set of foam amounts are followed for each drink:

  • Cappuccino – 2-4 cm of foam
  • Caffe Latte – 1-2 cm of foam
  • Flat White – 1-2 cm of foam

As the name suggests, a caffe latte is created with milk and coffee. The beverage will be on the milkier side and will have a mild coffee flavour. Caffe latte is great for people who are just starting to drink coffee.

All About Flat White

In case you're unaware, flat white originated from Australia. On the other hand, all the espresso-based beverages originated from Italy. Traditionally, flat whites are served in a glass but sometimes you can also see them being served in a small mug. The overall size of the glass or mug should be around 200 ml and per serve of flat white should have two espressos. Hence, you can expect the coffee flavour to be stronger than a cappuccino or caffe latte. The overall foam that is to be provided should be flat and as little as possible (1-2 cm).

Flat whites are recommended for those who are already used to the coffee flavour and are therefore looking for a stronger coffee flavour.

Concluding Thoughts

It can be easily seen from the above-mentioned features that both caffe latte and flat white are great for coffee aficionados. However, they differ in the amount of coffee they contain. Choose the one that suits your palette the most. Happy drinking!
