The XPERIA Z4 Tablet is instantly recognizable as a Sony product. Simple, slim and sharp – it looks great and will appeal to your inner shopaholic immediately. For looks, we have put it there with the iPad Air 2, although it is a bit too short with the numerous seams on the edges. The smooth, uninterrupted lines of the air give it the upper hand. The Z4 tablet was encased by Sony with a soft-touch plastic, with only the metal button is indicated by the power switch. The plastic surface does not feel nearly as good as metal, but has a great advantage: the tablet remains incredibly light. And that's no exaggeration. The XPERIA weighs an amazing 393g (the pure Wi-Fi model is 4g lighter) making it one of the handiest 10 “tablets on the market. The 437g iPad Air 2, on the other hand, seems almost overweight.
The Z4 is also just 6.1mm thick and fits the best of Apple. The curved edges are good in the hand. You can comfortably hold the XPERIA with one hand over a longer period of time. Fancy a movie while lying flat on the sofa? No problem. Even children can handle it easily. However, we are not entirely convinced by the quality of construction. The volume rocker rattles rather loosely in its neckline and is far too light to press accidentally as it sits exactly where you position your left hand. However, the metal power button offers just enough resistance to stop you if you do not want it, but not so much that it's hard to press it.
The XPERIA Z4 survived for a week in our packed bag without being scratched. Nevertheless, we recommend that you treat it carefully, as it is relatively easy to play with your hands. The Z4 is available in either black or white, but we think the dark color scheme looks much slimmer. Fingerprints are clearly on the black back, but they can easily be wiped off. As most of us expect from Sony's top-end products, the Z4 tablet is both waterproof and dustproof. However, it is quite confusing that it has both IP65 protection and IP68 protection. Fortunately, Sony provides a list of guidelines to make sure you do not accidentally drown.
Before you think about dipping it in your kitchen sink, make sure you close the terminal covers properly. It's a little annoying, and you'll open it up and close it again just in case you did not get it right the first time. However, it is worth taking these extra seconds. It will survive to be submerged to a depth of 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes. However, this only applies if the water is fresh. Saltwater is strictly forbidden, but you can use it in your local swimming pool, as long as you rinse it with clean water. Unlike the micro SD slot, the micro USB port is not protected by flaps or caps. So you need to make sure it is completely dry before connecting cables.
