With so few companies launching high-end Android tablets today, it's refreshing to see something like the XPERIA Tablet Z from Sony. The Tablet Z weighs only 1.09 pounds and is 0.27 inches thick and has a 10.1-inch display with 1080p. As Engadget notes, the Toshiba Excite 10 LE is the thinnest and lightest 10 inch tablet in the world. For a good measure, it is also thinner and lighter than Apple's iPad 2 (and the voluminous iPad of the current generation) and slimmer than the iPad Mini. XPERIA Z is an appealing-looking tablet – but this time it's conventionally good and not a continuation of the company's previous attempts to go in its own right. Instead, the company has given the design aesthetic of the XPERIA Z-smartphone a more straightforward black, square design that radiates class.
The Tablet Z is 6.9mm thick – Sony says it's the thinnest 10.1-inch tablet on the market – and weighs just 1.09 lbs. Its waterproof – Sony threw a Z into a small aquarium during my demo for me, without any negative effects. It's the first tablet to use Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon S4 quad-core processor. The camera functions seem to be above average: The rear camera is equipped with 8 megapixels, and the camera app is based on the interface that Sony uses for its standalone digital cameras.
As with XPERIA Tablet S, Z's predecessor, Sony places special emphasis on features that make the new XPERIA feel at home in the living room. The unit has an infrared port that serves as a universal remote, and TV SideView, a new version of Sony's fancy guide to TV broadcasts available via cable, Netflix and other sources. Like most new Sony products, it uses NFC technology to enable the feature called Sony One-Touch: the ability to send music from the tablet to a one-touch speaker by tapping the two devices together.
Sony says the Tablet Z will be available this spring and is priced just like Apple's comparable iPads. Both versions have Micro-SD slots for memory expansion.) This is actually a price increase compared to the XPERIA Tablet S, which started with $ 399 and the Z is in a different class than a tablet with a lower price than one iPad Amazon's 8.9 “Kindle Fire HD, which this company has offered for only $ 249.
