The tablets from Sony have improved quietly over the years. The XPERIA Z2 Tablet and the Z3 Tablet Compact were two of the best in 2014, and were at the forefront of sophistication and dazzling new features. The XPERIA Z4 Tablet is the direct replacement for the Z2, and Sony has enabled all the correct check boxes when creating it. With its slim profile, high-resolution display and the latest chips inside, it looks like a dream on paper. Does it meet the expectations? The XPERIA Z4 Tablet from Sony is a fantastic Android device with a pointless keyboard dock. If you can buy one alone, it might be the perfect tablet for you, but it's too expensive to recommend with the included dock.
Hardware:
As usual with Sony devices, the Z4 does not deviate wildly from the design of its predecessor, but that's not a big problem. The Z2 was thin, light, fast and waterproof. The Z4 is thinner, lighter, faster and more waterproof. We've seen this basic blueprint in some variations since the beginning of 2013, making the Z4 a pretty anonymous plastic and glass plate. This does not mean that there has been no improvement since the last model. The Z4 is a much smaller tablet. Slimmer panels reduce space requirements considerably. It is now 657 cm high (opposite the 6,8 of the Z2) and a clean width of 10 cm. The reduction in width is a big step forward. Sony is about half an inch from the Z2, which makes the tablet much easier in terms of the 16:10 aspect ratio of the screen.
Although the dimensions have changed a bit, the only real “wow” factor is the weight. The LTE version I tested is only 393 g (0.87 lbs). For the context, the Z2 weighed 439 g (0.97 lbs) and the cellular iPad Air 2 444 g (0.98 lbs). This may sound silly, but the Z4 is almost too bright. Something about the lack of density scares me that if I drop it, it breaks into tiny pieces. The tablet PC does not feel reassuring due to its weight and matte black plastic back, compared to the iPad made of aluminum or even the soft-touch plastic of the Nexus 9.
Display and sound:
It's been around 16 months since I first got hold of the Z2. His 1,920 x 1,200 display is still considered one of the finest I've ever seen, so much so that I would not have complained so loudly if Sony had just stayed with the Z4. Instead, of course, it did not opt for a brand new 2,560 x 1,600 panel, which is absolutely great. It uses the same triluminous technology as the Z2, but increases both pixel density and maximum brightness. Blacks are deep; Viewing angles are perfect; and colors are rich without being gaudy.
Because the Z4 is a 10.1-inch tablet with a killer screen, the bad speakers feel like a mistake. However, whether this is a big problem for you really depends on where you will be using the tablet. If I want to watch or play something on a tablet, I'm either out of the house or the TV is taken away. For that reason I will almost always use headphones anyway. However, if you're using a tablet instead of a TV or laptop, the audio quality may be a dealbreaker.
Software:
The Z4 comes with a modified version of Android 5.0.2. Sony can get a pass from me because it does not contain the latest and greatest version of Google. However, 5.1 became public knowledge only after the announcement of the register. However, the custom XPERIA interface did not really evolve over the past year, even though Android has changed massively over the same period.
Sony's additions are still in place, such as the “Small Apps” feature, which lets you drag a small calculator, browser, calendar, etc. across regular applications, but incorporates virtually none of the material design enhancements that came with Android Lollipop, The pop-up app drawer, the Google Now tab to the left of the home screen – all that's left with the same temporary experience as previous XPERIAs. The only significant change from the design we saw last year was the Z2 with the 5.0.2 update. The multitasking menu now offers large thumbnails instead of the small set of horizontally scrollable icons.
