Sony has made a name for itself in the world-class smartphone and tablet rooms with inspired designs and impressive performance. The Sony XPERIA Tablet Z ($ 499.99) looks like an extended version of the adorable XPERIA Z smartphone. It's remarkably thin and lightweight, features a sharp display and delivers world-class performance thanks to its fast quad-core processor. In addition, you get a fully waterproof design, an expandable micro-SD memory and a built-in IR transmitter for TV remote control functions. The XPERIA Tablet Z is one of the best Android tablets on the market and is a worthy alternative to top-end tablets.
Design and functions:
The first time I touched an iPad mini, I wondered about its thinness and lightness. I had a similar reaction when I first picked up the ZBest Price tablet on Amazon. At 0.27 inches thick and 1.09 pounds, it's remarkably thin and lightweight for a 10-inch tablet. By comparison, the full-size iPad is 0.37 inches thick and 1.44 pounds, while the grade 10.1 is 0.35 inches thick and 1.31 pounds. The nearly half a pound difference is significant and makes the Tablet Z more comfortable than other 10 inch tablets. Due to its slimness, the tablet feels a bit sensitive. It's well built, but you can feel it bend as you turn at both ends. In addition, I noticed that there was an LCD noise around the edges as I applied pressure along the bezels.
The Tablet Z is also completely waterproof. The flaps cover the 3.5mm headphone jack, micro USB port and micro SD card slot around the tablet. At the bottom two corners are speaker grilles, in which your palms are natural, so they can be easily covered. I dipped the Tablet Z into a bucket of water and it was completely untouched, even when it was completely underwater, to play a video. This is a pure Wi-Fi tablet that connects to 802.11b / g / n networks at 2.4 and 5 GHz frequencies. Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC are also on board. Sony offers two models, a 16GB for $ 499.99 and a 32GB for $ 599.99, and our 32GB and 64GB SanDisk micro SD cards both worked well.
Performance and Android:
The XPERIA Tablet Z is powered by a 1.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor with 2GB of RAM. This is the first tablet we tested with this setup, and it did not disappoint – the Tablet Z burnt our benchmarks. From fast switching between multiple running apps to graphically intense games like Real Racing 3, the Tablet Z has done everything we've planned for. The glide between the boot screens loaded with the widget and the browsing of media-heavy Web sites went smoothly with very little interruption. This is a really fast tablet.
Besides the cosmetic adjustments, there are fortunately some really useful additions. On the home screen you will notice two major differences between the Sony version and the standard Android. The first is a bar at the top, containing four customizable shortcuts, a Google search and voice shortcut, and an app drawer starter. I really like the shortcuts at the top, as they allow me to keep my home screens a bit confusing, while keeping my most important apps always at hand. The second modification is the multi-tasking apps from Sony. These will run in small windows over the current app you are running. These include a browser, a calculator, a notepad, a clip manager, a timer, a recorder and a remote control. You can download other small Sony-compatible apps, from Twitter clients to camera apps. You can also make a small app from any widget. I found the little apps quite useful; although they lag behind the split-screen multitasking that comes with the Galaxy Note 10.1.
