HighPressure Grinding Roller (HPGR) has become an increasingly popularsolution in the U.S. for processing of rough-hewn stone and othersolid organic compounds in high volume. In particular rough coarseores like Galapagos granite, marble and limestone are suitable forhigh-pressure grinding, because these materials contain smallparticles that are difficult to chip using conventional grindingmethods. In order to increase productivity and profit from the highvolume of processed material that HPGR can produce, companies mustuse more machines, including diamond-tipped grinders and electricshredders. But despite these benefits, it is important to keep inmind that the potential for damage to the grinding equipment whenrough rocks are used in these machines is always a risk. This isespecially true when fine particles of irregular shapes are involved.
Oneof the common causes of equipment damage in highpressure grinding rollers is due to incomplete closing of thecutting edges of the wheels or an ineffective, poorly sized cutter.Both of these issues, coupled with wear caused by abrasions and chipscaused by the use of rough water-based compounds, can significantlyreduce the life of the machine. When using diamond-tipped, electric,or hydraulically powered high pressure grinding rollers, it isimportant to properly maintain the machine. The most common cause ofdamage to this equipment is poor maintenance practices, which includeinadequate lubrication of the grinding components and a lack of sizereduction.
Inaddition to poor maintenance, the use of low quality feed materialcan lead to equipment failure in high pressure grinding roller. Feedmaterial is critical for the proper operation of most high pressuregrinding rollers. Corrosion, which occurs with low quality feedmaterial, can also reduce the life of the equipment. Feed materialshould always be made of graphite, stainless steel, or other highpressure resistant materials.
