Psychiatrists and counselors often prescribe medication for better mental health, but they also apprise that it is tough. Not many have mastered this art.

What Does Meditation Do?

People have been talking about the connection between the brain and meditation for years now. Physician Barry Kerzin, MD, who provides his service to the Dalai Lama, is a doctor and a monk who strongly believes that meditation can change an entire person’s mindset by controlling and relaxing the brain.

Physicians like him have spent pulses explaining the central theme of mindfulness meditation. Studies declare remarkable changes in a brain after it goes through meditation. It helps in relieving stress, recovering from depression, and many other physical illnesses like blood pressure that stays under control, and bowels get less upset.

Kicking Off with Meditation

Firstly, It is important to be mentally prepared before stepping into such a divine motif and embracing your flaws. Meditation can be more effective if combined with yoga. The body stretches, so it makes the mind.

Secondly, a space in our house, an open space where the body and the brain both can breathe freely without any difficulty, needs to be located and then take the first step towards meditation. Lighting candles or incense will purify the air around us to feel absolutely filtered and fresh.

Thirdly, while you begin to breathe in and breathe out with your eyes closed, forget about everything else and relax, separate your mind from all the problems and connect your soul to the universe. Feel nature, feel your existence. This is the most effective way of practicing meditation.

Effectiveness Of Meditation

The reason behind the change of structure of the brain is mindfulness meditation. An experiment where a person was asked to continue mindfulness meditation for eight weeks shows up with an increased cortical thickness in the hippocampus, which commands learning and boosts memory.

The amygdala, which is accountable for fear, anxiety, and stress, has decreased brain cell volume in the brain. Therefore, this practice not only relieves stress but also brings a drastic change in perception and feelings. Not being able to concentrate and be attentive is not just a children’s problem; adults, too, suffer from this. The answer to all of this is meditation.

Rotation In Wisdom

As our brain is a sublime malleable organ that reacts to action, the more the brain works on a certain area, the more it gets experienced. So while doing meditation, there is a lot that is happening in our brain.

The best way is to not judge the feelings that are coming and going in our mind and simply allow it while it settles down by themselves. Various regions of our brain get activated and make neutral trails that are responsible for thoughts, sensations, feelings, and actions.

Mindfulness meditation is at its early stage; it is a new way of meditating that people are learning to adapt. Small studies have shown that mindfulness meditation may increase gray matter in the hippocampus and other frontal regions of the brain responsible for emotions, solving problems, and social interactions.

Another interesting fact about mindfulness meditation is that it deactivates our sympathetic nervous system, in other words, our fight or flight response. The question we need to ask ourselves when stressed, angry or worried…. ‘Is this how I am supposed to respond?’.

The Time It Takes

Good things in life are hard to earn and take a lot of time. It is the same with meditation; it takes time; meditation acts like a guide in our life that shows the right way to live, act and respond. It brings about a change with time.

If we meditate for 6 to 12 months for 20 to 30 minutes every day, the outcome if not amazes you but impresses you is that the brain changes its structure as well as function.

It Ain’t A Magic Pill

Meditation can root for incredible changes in our brain and swap our outlook. Keep in mind that it doesn’t happen overnight. Meditation is all about letting go and bringing peace to ourselves because if we can't, probably no one will. The less we judge ourselves, which is mostly the feelings one is surrounded with, the more we will become the person we want to be, and meditation is just a mirror that shows you the real ‘you.

Meditation Is For Focused Mind

Meditation is not everybody’s cup of tea; people who are fickle-minded by nature suffer the most to calm down in heated situations. To meditate in a disturbing ambiance is absolutely wrong. Many people have no idea about the benefits of meditation; they have an imprecise picture of what it is. Therefore, it’s a waste of time to many. What could possibly be good about just sitting with your eyes closed?

As mentioned above, mindfulness meditation is a new thesis that has been introduced to us in recent times by Andrew D. Huberman, a neuroscientist, after Kerzin. Huberman, in his interview, has spoken a lot about it, explained facts, and justified our brain for why it responds in profuse ways.

Winding- Up

If you are at the last line of my article and still going through a dilemma about whether to take in meditation or not…I’ll say it is as useful as pointless it is to take pills instead to make yourself, feel better. It feels much better when one has control over themselves and not by some external source on which we have to depend on finding the answers that we seek.
