Electrical work is difficult and potentially dangerous if not performed properly. Before you may obtain a license to work independently, you must have substantial training and experience working under a licensed contractor. The following are the five steps required to become an Electrician St Kilda.

Ensure You Get What You Want

Before beginning your journey, you must conduct extensive research on what it takes to become an electrician.

The last thing you want is to spend years pursuing a goal only to learn that you dislike the effort.

Talk to other electricians, shadow them if you can, and make sure it's something you can see yourself doing for decades.

Are You Eligible?

Before beginning your quest to become an electrician, you must ensure that you are qualified for the position.

Here are the fundamental requirements for a profession as an electrician:

– Be at least 18 years old. – Have a high school graduation or GED. – Be in good physical shape. – Have reliable transportation to school and employment sites. – Be able to work independently and in a group. – Be able to follow directions.

Depending on your state, there may be additional standards you must satisfy before beginning your career as an electrician. This article provides details on how to obtain a license in California.

Apply To Vocational School Or Apprenticeship Programs

To become an electrician, you must now apply for training. You have two options: vocational training or an apprenticeship.

The vocational school will be located on a campus with labs to give you practical skills and training. This is a terrific option for those who learn best from experienced instructors in a classroom setting and while working alongside their peers and instructors. If you decide to enroll in a trade school, you must ensure that the institution is licensed by the California Division of Industrial Relations; otherwise, you will not be able to sit for your licensure exam and work as an electrician.

You can also choose to become an apprentice, which requires you to attend classes for a period of typically three to four years. Apprenticeships are more difficult to obtain due to the combination of instruction and job experience, as well as the lengthy duration of the programs. (Read more about the IBEW and apprenticeships on this page)

Prepare For the Exam

After completing your state-approved trade school program or apprenticeship, you must study the national code for electricians in order to sit for the licensing exam.

Many vocational schools will teach you the national code while you are still in school, allowing you to begin studying for your licensing exam even before you graduate. Some choose to take the exam immediately after completing trade school instruction, but they must still get confirmed job experience in order to become licensed.

Licensure Requirements

Now that you have studied extensively, you can take and (hopefully) pass the state electrician exam. To become a licensed electrician in the state of California, you must also get paid work experience.

However, you may work while accruing your hours using your “T-Card.”
