Kidney stone is something which is very common among men and if one already had faced with a kidney stone before then it is much likely that it can happen again 10 to 15 years later. But if one takes proper preventive measures then it might not come back again.

There are a certain things that one needs to do in order to get relief from kidney stone pain but before that, one has to be aware of where do kidney stones come from. Well, these stones mostly develop when a few substances like oxalate, calcium and uric acid get concentrated together to form some crystals in the kidney. The crystal can grow larger into stones. Almost 85 percent of kidney stones are made from calcium and the rest are made from uric acids and they happen because some people have low pH levels in their urine.

After the stones get formed in the kidneys, then they can dislodge and pass down the ureter by blocking the normal flow of the urine. As a result, one can suffer from severe pain including a kind of pain that happens at one side of the body in between the stomach and the back and it is known as the flank pain. There can be blood in the urine sometimes along with vomiting and nausea. As the stone passes down to the ureter towards the bladder, then it can also cause the frequent urination and some pain in the groin.

No matter what symptoms one face, they must consult a doctor immediately and get to know about the condition of the stone after going through a urinalysis or a renal ultrasound. Sometimes a CY scan or an abdominal X ray is also done to find out the source of pain and how many kidney stones are present.

Most stones take typically a few weeks to a few months to pass away depending on its size and the number of stones present in the kidney. Sometimes, over the counter medicines like naproxen or ibuprofen can help one to ease the pain and discomfort. The doctor can also prescribe some medicines which can help the muscles to relax in the ureter and pass the stone quickly.

For kidney disease treatment, one can always take help of a doctor. In case of kidney stones which are not needed to be operated one has to drink enough water to let the stone pass quickly. Drinking 2.5 litres of water daily is mostly recommended here. One also needs to skip high oxalate foods in their regular diets like beets, spinach and almonds. Lemons are a good cure here, because it can block the stone formation. Studies have shown that if one can drink half a cup of lemon juice mixed with diluted water every day then it can increase the urine citrate that reduces the kidney stone risk.

When the pain becomes too severe and if the stone is too large to pass, then they are needed to be surgically removed with a procedure known as ureteroscopy.
