Fishing offshore on a boat is much different than fishing from the riverbank or shore of a lake. The sun beats down on you in open water, even in the cooler autumn and winter weather. But even with the sun beating down, the seawater can be pretty chilly. With the right fishing clothes and weather information, you can stay comfortable while you fight to bring up a prize catch from the depths. Here are a few tips on how to survive fishing off the coast in the cooler months.
Wear the Right Type of Fishing Clothes
First, you will want to wear performance fishing shirts. These are long-sleeved shirts that are usually made from moisture-wicking fabric. This helps you stay dry, which is even more important when the water is cold. When shopping around for a performance shirt, pay extra attention to the materials. Any old cotton T-shirt will leave you soaked and shivering, plus it might not offer adequate sun protection.
You won’t be able to escape the sun when out on the water, so protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays is a must. If you plan on layering (which you should), be sure everything offers this same moisture-wicking and sun-protecting performance. If you are wearing a hoodie made of the same performance fabric, find one with a built-in fishing mask. It will keep the sun off of your face and keep you dry.
Dress in Layers
You will want to dress in layers to keep warm. As mentioned, you will likely want to wear special fabric that will wick away moisture to keep you dry. Hoodies can also help keep you warm, as can wearing vests over other layers. If it’s a windy day, consider wearing a windbreaker, as well. You might want a lightweight anorak jacket with a storm hood, depending on how rough the seas are off the coast. These might come with a water-repellent finish and UPF technology to keep the sun’s rays at bay.
Another option is a fleece hoodie to help you stay warm. These might have air pockets embedded in the fabric to help with insulation while staying lightweight, making them ideal for layering. When getting your fishing outfits ready for offshore excursions, be sure you can move freely while wearing these layers so you can fight and reel in the fish with ease.
Every Part of the Country Will Be Different
Fishing offshore during the cold months is very different between California, Florida, and Massachusetts. In California, you may only need a light jacket or windbreaker and a wide-brimmed hat. On the other hand, you can probably expect rain off the coast of New England, so be prepared for rough seas. It’s also much colder there too, so pack a few extra layers just in case. In Florida, you can expect perhaps some of the year’s best fishing weather, with highs in the 70s. Even then, the ocean spray can be a bit chilly, so make sure you have a fishing mask handy.
