Intrauterine Insemination Introduction

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment that involves placing washed and concentrated sperm directly into the uterus during ovulation to help a woman conceive. It is a relatively simple procedure that can be used by couples who are having difficulty conceiving. Natural conception involves the sperm traveling from the vagina, through the cervix, into the uterus, and up to the fallopian tube to meet the egg released by the ovaries. Fertilization then occurs in the fallopian tube. With IUI, the sperm is placed directly into the uterus, bypassing the vagina and cervix, to increase the chances of fertilization.
