Did you know that from the beginning of 2023 until now, the MOVEit data breach is the largest data breach? Today, let's learn about this issue together!
Introduce
MOVEit is managed file transfer software developed by Ipswitch, Inc. , a subsidiary of Progress Software.
In May 2023, a ransomware group called Clop began abusing and exploiting vulnerabilities in Progress Software's MOVEit Transfer software. In that situation, Progress released a new patch but the damage was extremely serious. Clop widespread attack has stolen many important data from governments, businesses, and individuals around the world.
Main attack range
According to Emsisoft statistics, the majority of attacks target entities based in the United States accounting for more than 80%, those in Germany are 3.4%, those in Canada are 2.6% and UK organizations are 1.9%.
The most affected are:
- U.S. government service contractor Maximus (11 million individuals affected)
- French unemployment agency Pôle Emploi (10 million individuals affected)
- Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (6 million individuals affected)
- Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing (4 million individuals affected)
- Oregon Department of Transportation (3.5 million people affected)
Level of loss
The education sector was hardest hit, accounting for about 41% of victims, followed by healthcare (19%) and financial/professional services (12%). Emsisoft estimates the total cost of the attack at $10,637,147,400, based on the average data breach costs calculated by IBM in its 2023 Cost of Data Breach Report.
The importance of anonymity
In a context where thousands of companies are struggling with the Clop attack, and millions of people have had all of their personal information stolen. Clop is just a single attack compared to many others that humans will face in the future. That shows us the importance of using temporary identities (prevention is better than cure).
Things to do now
As I said above, the importance of anonymity is a must in this online age. Equip yourself with new knowledge in protecting personal information by using temporary tools such as SMSer.net (Receive SMS Online), Smailpro.com (Temp mail), Ugener.com (Fake Name Generator) , Cardgener.com (Random Credit Card Numbers Generator).
Lessons learned
The MOVEit violation shows that even famous government organizations and businesses are not absolutely safe, so there will certainly be no opportunity for individuals to use online services. Leaving no trace when joining the Internet is the right thing to do – that's called intelligence.
conclusion
Not only the above MOVEit breach but also many other data breaches have taken place. We cannot deny the importance of security, not only in large organizations and businesses but also in individual individuals. Let's learn more new knowledge to protect ourselves and don't forget to use the tools I mentioned above – they are worth using!
