The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a disability support initiative legislated in 2013 by the Australian government. Ever since its nationwide rollout in 2020, the NDIS has been providing direct funding to eligible people with disabilities to access necessary support and services. The NDIS aims to move away from the traditional one-size- fits-all approach to disability services. Instead, it focuses on individualised plans that consider the unique needs, goals, and aspirations of each participant. To access NDIS support, certain eligibility criteria must be met. Generally, eligible individuals must be between the ages of 9 and 65 and have a permanent and significant disability that impacts their ability to carry out
daily activities or participate in the community.

After confirming their eligibility, people with disabilities can apply to the NDIS by completing the Access Request Form given on the NDIS website. The form is also available with the Local Area Coordinators, Early Childhood Partners or NDIA offices. To make an application to the NDIS, individuals with disabilities can also choose to call 1800 800 110 and proceed with a verbal application. When sending in the application, it is important to provide evidence substantiating important information about the prospective participant. These include confirming their age, verifying the status of their Australian citizenship or permanent residency and comprehensive documentation that validates the nature of their disability. If deemed eligible, the applicant will have a planning meeting with an NDIS representative. This is a crucial step, as it involves discussing the participant’s goals, needs, and desired outcomes. Based on the information shared during the planning meeting, a personalised NDIS plan will be developed. This plan outlines the support and funding that
will be provided.

Navigating the NDIS can be quite challenging for new participants. Aussie Life Care can help you ease into your NDIS journey and assist you in achieving your goals. Contact us today to learn more about our support and services.
