Every elementary school teacher serves as a reading instructor and is crucial to assisting each student in developing their reading skills. Students and instructors will feel competent and confident in teaching and learning to read if we provide the resources to satisfy our students’ literacy needs as early as pre-kindergarten. It’s vital to foster a love of reading in addition to aiding children to learn to read. Compared to students who are compelled to read, those who choose to read show less negative attitudes toward reading. Through this article, we at National Public School, Sarjapur, will focus on why and how reading is pertinent and important in children!

Every elementary school teacher serves as a reading instructor and is crucial to assisting each student in developing their reading skills. Students and instructors will feel competent and confident in teaching and learning to read if we provide the resources to satisfy our students’ literacy needs as early as pre-kindergarten. Along with teaching students how to read, it’s important to encourage a love of reading. Compared to students who are compelled to read, those who choose to read show less negative attitudes toward reading.

Motivating kids to read is the key to fostering their love of books. A shelf full of books that correspond to kids’ reading levels and areas of interest is one of the best tools we have discovered for inspiring enthusiasm. They ought to be surrounded by books with titles that are representative of both their own and their peers’ lives. Students’ attention levels rise when they discover books featuring characters who look like them and families that mirror their own or their neighbours. Making these connections improves students’ comprehension.

Novels representing diverse genres should be made available to students so they can choose the books they enjoy reading the most. A youngster may not be familiar with all of the genres of stories that are written for readers of all ages unless they are given the chance to read poetry, mysteries, autobiographies, historical fiction, biographies, and science fiction. The first step in getting kids hooked on reading is letting them choose their own books. We at National Public School believe that the development of successful, autonomous readers starts when pupils take responsibility for their reading.

Peers are an excellent source for assisting kids in selecting novels they will enjoy reading. By making individualised book recommendations for their classmates, we encourage our students to act as book matchmakers. A recommendation template that can be piled in the classroom book nook is simple to make. Students can complete the customised book recommendation form and give it to a classmate when they discover a book they believe might appeal to their classmates’ interests and hobbies.

The instructional and independent reading skills of kids can be determined using literacy diagnostic methods like running records or anecdotal notes. Teachers can record the reading behaviours they notice during one-on-one or small-group reading instruction, including any mistakes made while reading, students’ answers to comprehension questions, or specifics about their expression, tone, or reading rate.

Teachers can introduce students to high-interest instructional text across genres through daily guided reading. Students get the chance to read books of their choosing at their independent reading level as part of daily individualised reading practise. As a good practice during small-group reading instruction, expose kids to a variety of book genres. When kids discover a book they are interested in, they can make it their go-to selection for independent reading time.

Students can read more actively if they have prior understanding of the topic or subject matter. For instance, if a child has never visited a farm, he or she might not get how important the barn’s location is to the story’s plot. Another technique to broaden knowledge is to make stories and articles applicable to daily life and current affairs. It is preferred to send students on virtual/real field trips or give them access to actual objects so they can gain background knowledge before reading.

Give students regular opportunities for guided reading in the classroom, individual reading, and choice. Encourage them with comprehension techniques and expose them to a variety of culturally relevant and interesting genres to foster a love of reading. We at National Public School, Sarjapur believe that today’s reader is tomorrow’s leader!
