Black Golf players have played a significant role in the growth of golf, both on and off the course, from John Shippen to Tiger Woods and Renee Powell to Charlie Sifford. Some of the game's greatest Black professional golfers have competed in major golf tournaments in the US. This massive golf event has a long history for many African-American Pioneers golf players.

Impacting History

It all began when at the age of 17, John Shippen, whose father was African-American and mother was Shinnecock Indian, competes in the 1896 US Open at Shinnecock Hills, where he worked as a caddie. When they learn of his race, some professional players threaten to boycott the event, but back down when USGA President Theodore Havemayer defends Shippen and another entrant, Shinnecock Indian Oscar Bunn. Shippen finishes sixth and receives a $10 prize. He then goes on to compete in five more US Opens.

Ted Rhodes became the second among the Black golf players to compete in the US Open at Rivera Country Club in Los Angeles in 1948. For many years, Rhodes was a major figure in the United Golfers Association. The UGA hosted African-American golf tournaments.

For example, Tiger Woods, a 14-time major winner and three-time US Amateur champion, has also made a difference through his Tiger Woods Foundation. Charlie Sifford was the first African-American to compete on the PGA Tour and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2004.

What is The Message?

These players can inspire the black community in America to remember its significant past in the game of Golf, its achievements, its struggle, and most importantly its message that black golfers have great potential in the game. These pioneer Golf players also spread the message that the black community should have the same rights in the country.

Conclusion

The list of black golf players continues. Other Black golfers who made significant contributions to the game, such as Bill Spiller, Pete Brown, Charlie Owens, James Black, and others, helped to lay the groundwork for Tiger Woods. And they must not be forgotten.

Golf has not always been a welcoming sport to the Black community in the USA. Many Black professional golfers had to fight and claw their way onto certain courses, and players like Bill Spiller and Ted Rhodes helped pave the way as the first Black golfers to challenge the PGA that supports only white players.
