Pectins, also known as pectic polysaccharides, contain a high concentration of galacturonic acid. Within the pectic group, several distinct polysaccharides have been identified and characterised. Homogalacturonans are -(1-4)-linked D-galacturonic acid linear chains. Substituted galacturonans are distinguished by the presence of saccharide-dependent residues (such as D-xylose or D-apiose in the case of xylogalacturonan and apiogalacturonan, respectively) branching from a D-galacturonic acid backbone.
