E-bikes are bicycles with a small electric motor that either supplements or replaces the pedalling effort. E-bike models come in both pedal-assist and throttle-based motor activation varieties. There are additionally complex models on the market with modern electric motors and optional throttle activation. The market offers e-bikes in three different classes: Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3. They are often divided into two speed categories: up to 25 kmph and 25–45 kmph.
People are considering bicycles for short distances across cities due to a lack of parking space and increasing traffic congestion, particularly in metropolitan areas. As a result, many governments around the world are taking steps to alleviate traffic congestion. For example, the United Kingdom announced in May 2020 a £2 billion (approximately US$ 2.6 billion) plan to increase cycling and walking both during and after the lockdown. However, the £2 billion is not new funding; it is part of the funding announced in February 2020 for cycling and buses.
