The transcendental power update of USB-C tech has resulted in a staggering 240W power capacity, which is expected to change the game for gaming laptops and other tech devices. If we look at the result achieved by USB-C mathematically, then the 240W performance is a 100W increase from what is possible in the contemporary USBs. And, based on this, we can surely expect high-power devices and cables to use the technology later on in 2021.

The latest standard, commonly dubbed as “USB-C,” has been specifically designed for those devices that derive large power like gaming laptops, 4K monitors, docking stations, or printers. There is now also good news for people enthusiastic about USB-C that it has come with an upgrade that lets these devices draw out 240W of power. The standard with an upgrade is expected to be released sometime in 2021. Mathematically, the 240W capacity is more than a 100% increase to the 100W top capacity offered by today’s USBs.

A group called USB Implementers Group, an industry group, attributed to the creation of this technology said on Tuesday that never-seen-before power levels had been achieved by Type-C iteration of US after being exposed to the update titled “Version 2.1.” The latest power option, 240W, has now been dubbed as “Extended Power Range” or “EPR.”

USB-IF also reckoned in the statement that the group firmly believed that there would be an upsurge in the number of devices having the prerequisite specification to support higher-end power levels, starting this year itself. We have been using USB ports for a long time now, and traditionally they were being used for porting mice, keyboards, and printers into the Personal Computer. However, as time went by, USB took the place of Firewire as well, as more speed let it take care of complex tasks of users as well. Then, with the advent of the mobile revolution, it also found applications in mobile re-charging, indicating things to come. It showed the world there it also has capabilities of giving out power and not just data. However, now with the arrival of EPR, an acronym for Extended Power Range, which is 240W, things are about to change for good yet again.

However, the cables which will be supporting EPR will have to fulfill additional prerequisite before they can accommodate this staggering new level of power driving capacity. Furthermore, USB-IF will also be rolling out few icons so that end-users will get some idea about the cables and which ones are capable of supporting the EPR range and which ones aren’t.

And now, with this new alteration, end-users can also expect to see the new appearance of cables supporting lower-end power driving capacity, which is also called as Standard Power Range. The USB-IF has revealed it will make sure that the end-users will get an idea regarding the power specification of the cable and which ones are capable of accommodating only SPR, or both SPR and EPR, or only EPR. Furthermore, the higher-end cables available today that have the capacity of drawing 5 Amp current will inevitably be replaced with EPR cables sometime in the future.

The direct application of these EPR cables will be found in higher-end products such as expensive gaming laptops, 4K monitors,  workstations, and other useful devices. For example, one of Dell’s higher-end products (32-inch long UltraSharp 4K monitor) can draw up to 230W of power, the same as many gaming laptops.

Meta Description

The power upgrade introduced by upgrade 2.1 version of USB-IF has rendered USB-C to achieve a whopping power capacity of 240W, also called EPR for short.
