Care & Osteoporosis Treatment
Although osteoporosis cannot be totally reversed, it can be managed. Some of these measures, such as diet and exercise, can be done on a daily basis. Your doctor may also advise you to take medication.
Most osteoporosis medications are designed to keep your bones as strong as possible. However, they all work in various ways:
Bisphosphonates, such as alendronate (Binosto, Fosamax), ibandronate acid (Boniva), and risedronic acid (Actonel, Atelva), prevent the body from breaking down bone and thereby cure osteoporosis. Boniva is taken once a month, whereas the others can be taken once a week. These drugs can cause esophageal ulcers if taken wrongly, therefore it's critical to follow the directions to the letter.
