USA were defeated in their World Cup knockout debut before reaching the semi-final stage, falling to Sweden on penalties following 120 minutes and extra time of goalless play and extra time. USA were dominant throughout but could not break through an impassible Swedish defence led by Zecira Musovic who made 11 saves during and before a penalty shootout shootout.

Musovic was outstanding during the first half, saving Trinity Rodman's almost point-blank shot from Trinity Rodman before denying Sophia Smith one-on-one and smothering Alex Morgan's header. Shortly after halftime she showed her brilliance yet again by leaping leftward with both arms stretched out wide to stop another Horan rocket from reaching goal.

American backline was under intense pressure throughout, yet several misses from Megan Rapinoe and Kortney Keller proved costly as Sweden advanced to the quarterfinals. Vlatko Andonovski's squad should take pride in their performances at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium regardless of the outcome.

Goalkeeper Rodman

The United States created numerous scoring opportunities against Sweden in both regulation and extra time, but were unable to score thanks to an outstanding goalkeeping performance by Zecira Musovic on Swedish's side.

Sweden had been two-time defending champions and looked dangerous throughout 120 minutes, yet failed to score a goal. A penalty shootout ensued with Lina Hurtig taking the decisive spot-kick victory for Sweden.

Rodman attempted a penalty early in the shootout and was denied by an impressive diving save from Musovic. She came close again later when her header off Lindsey Horan cross narrowly missed hitting the top of crossbar – it marked three consecutive missed goals in World Cup penalty shootouts by USA, which has never happened in tournament history; likely prompting criticism and questions of Vlatko Andonovski as their head coach.

Goalkeeper Williams

Under normal circumstances, winning would have propelled USA into the semifinals; but, thanks to some poor decisions and Musovic's outstanding goalkeeping abilities, their dreams of reaching semifinals quickly dissipated.

Trinity Rodman made an early impactful statement with two shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes – both tests for Sweden's goalkeeper. Lindsey Horan also came close with her header off Andi Sullivan's corner that struck off the crossbar and hit Trinity Rodman hard in the chest.

After halftime, USA coach Sheila Johnson substituted Lynn Williams for Rodman and immediately saw her terrorize the left flank of Swedish defense before her low shot was blocked by Musovic.

Williams graduated from Cornell University as both a four-year starter and two-year captain, and currently coaches elite U-13 to U-17 club players at Rye, New Hampshire club teams. Prior to his involvement with soccer full time he also worked in sales, marketing and operations roles before turning full-time towards it as a profession – being both professional player in both America and Australia!
