Here is the list of safety measures and general instructions to avoid complications and risks following hair transplant procedure explained below:
General Post operative instructions following hair transplant cosmetic surgery:
- You can comfortably go home immediately after the procedure without any morbidity. You can resume your routine work the same day but is always advisable to take a day off and rest peacefully.
- It is always advised to keep your head elevated at an angle of 45° for at least 3-5 nights after the hair transplant procedure.
- It is strictly recommended to avoid consuming alcohol, smoking and taking aspirin for at least a week after the hair transplant.
Safety measures to manage short term complications?
Itching: It is a common consequence following hair transplant procedure which can be easily avoided by washing of scalp regularly and application of lotion as instructed by the hair transplant surgeon. It usually lasts for maximum a week and is often manageable but make sure to not scratch the recipient area to avoid any infection or displacement of the newly planted follicles.
Pain: Mild pain which is manageable and does not cause any morbidity could be a consequence following hair transplant procedure lasting for around a week. If you face any problem in bearing the pain, you will be prescribed painkillers by your hair transplant surgeon. If you encounter severe pain which is not usual one should immediately consult the respective hair transplant surgeon.
Safety measures for maintaining recipient site: While leaving the clinics after the procedure you will be provided a kit containing appropriate usable for maintenance of recipient area. The cleaning of donor and recipient area should be done as per the instructions suggested by the hair transplant surgeon. Lotions and shampoos are recommended by the surgeon to apply on the scalp for regular usage. Headband is also advised to patients after hair transplant to avoid swelling and used as directed by the hair transplant surgeon. Loose cap should be worn when moving outdoors so as to avoid entrapment of dirt around the newly transplanted hair follicles. Touching should be avoided at the recipient area for at least a week.
SWELLING: It is a common complication followed by hair transplant procedure which takes around a week to subside. It usually involves the forehead and could extend till eyelids in some patients. Swelling can be subsided by sleeping with head elevated at 45 degrees for at least 3-5 nights after surgery using multiple pillows. Headbands can be used to rectify swelling with pressure and should be worn for at least 2 days and 4-5 hours a day.
INFECTION: Infection is not a usual consequence following surgery if performed under strict asepsis and proper instructions are followed by the patient post procedure. It is better to avoid touching the recipient area for at least a week and wear loose cap when moving out to avoid infection. Still if you notice any signs of infection immediately report to the surgeon.
Physical activity:
- Routine work can be started the same day but it is better to rest the remaining day and starts the work the next day.
- Do not perform any strenuous activity or sports for at least 1 week.
- Hard core exercises should be strictly avoided for at least a month.
- Steam, sauna, swimming, hot baths and any activity which could lead to sweat should be avoided for at least a month.
Food and diet:
- Strictly avoid spicy food and ice creams for at least a week.
- Vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin C, Zinc and iron rich food items should be preferred.
HAIR CARE:
- Head will be bandaged immediately after the surgery for the respective day.
- Head wash can be initiated the next day with gentle hands and as prescribed by the hair transplant surgeon.
- Apply the shampoo and lotion advised by the surgeon and don’t self try anything.
- Do not apply pressure or scratch the head especially the recipient area while washing the hair for at least a week.
- Avoid touching the recipient area harshly with the fingernail.
- Do not hurry in applying styling chemicals and avoid using any hot tools for at least a year.
- Do not comb your hair for at least 10 days after the hair transplant procedure.
SUTURES:
- Suturing followed by FUT technique is removed after 7 days of the hair transplant procedure.
Hair transplant by FUE technique is not followed by suturing and the healing at the donor site requires around 7 days.
