It caused me to reflect on the role of education in our society and the promise of preparing students with useful skills to prosper in our fast-changing world (obviously, that was the first thought I had).

What I find most fascinating about this is not the show but the teacher from the Charlie Brown comics, who is represented as a sort of soulless, repetitive monster trying to hurt the kids. It's a frequent misconception that students are forced to learn and complete things against their will at schools, where they never get the feedback they are looking for.

I recently discovered some pretty intriguing ideas for the future of education enabled by web3 and blockchain (owing to Wes Kao and Vriti Saraf on Twitter).

To facilitate the integration of web3 eLearning app development, I created a web application to store verifiable credentials, such as certificates and degrees, on the blockchain with NFTs. Why is this even important, though, before I do that? What is wrong with education today, and what might web3 potentially do?

Of the over 1 BILLION pupils who attend school each day, more than 600 MILLION are unable to meet the minimum proficiency requirements in reading and math. The global learning crisis has been identified by the UN as the main barrier to properly preparing children for adulthood, the workforce, and civic involvement.

Paul D. Spears phrased it this way: “Education is a crucial factor for human flourishing.”

Even in nations with the highest levels of education, only a majority of citizens (about 37% of Americans over 25 in 2020) held a college degree.

One of the simplest ways to improve living conditions and advance equity is through education, and thankfully, new educational paradigms based on Web3's decentralized design are rapidly emerging.

So, what exactly is Web 3?

If web2 is the current way we access services on the internet, then web3 is the advancement of web2 both philosophically and technologically.

Web1's goal is to provide or show information (like websites). Web2 is all about communication and sharing (like Instagram and Facebook). In Web3, users can continue to be in charge of their works and ownership (more here).

From a technical standpoint, web1 and web2 leverage centralization to support all types of online activity. Web3 makes use of decentralization to enable verified ownership and transactions.

Why is it crucial?

How does this help education?

Due to economic incentives and web 2, large organizations are now able to centralize their power and determine how our information is used. Thanks to Web3, users can choose their online personas without giving up any important functionality. It has the power to dismantle the flawed mechanisms that have halted the advancement of systems like education.

If universities were fractionalized, you could get the micro-qualifications essential to your job while only paying for what you truly require, and you would have a lifelong portfolio of credentials accepted by all sectors and organizations.
